Walt Disney World Resort Safety Measures

EVERYTHING That Remains From Disney World’s Opening Day

Disney World theme parks, hotels, restaurants, attractions, services and other experiences may be modified, limited in capacity and subject to limited availability or even closure. Disney has implemented the following safety measures based on the guidance of government officials and health advisers:

  • Cleanliness and sanitization: Disney has increased cleaning and disinfection measures, and will continue to hold this standard. While regular cleaning has been reduced in frequency since first reopening in 2020, the hand sanitizers remain. Note that finger scanning at the touchpoints has returned.
  • Cast training: Disney provided new training and reinforcement to emphasize a strong culture of health and safety among its cast members.
  • Face coverings: The mask policy is ever-changing, based on current health guidelines. See our separate post for more details!
  • Contactless payment: Payment through MagicBands, Apple Pay and Google Pay is available at restaurants and retail shops. Mobile ordering at restaurants has been expanded and is highly encouraged or required.

Disney World History: Magic Kingdom under construction prior to opening

Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom under construction prior to its official opening on October 1st, 1971.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – After years of anticipation, Magic Kingdom opened to the public on October 1st, 1971, becoming the first Disney park to open in Florida. Fascinated park guests entered through the gates onto Main Street, being greeted with electric energy full of magic and awe.

Cindy Inserra was there that day, telling FOX 35 that “everyone around us was in awe of the magic of Mickey. The feeling was like floating and butterflies.”

Susan Kroll, another person who attended the opening of Magic Kingdom in 1971, felt similar energy, stating that “I couldnt even believe how beautiful it was. Everybody that was there was just fascinated with the whole place.”

Several attractions at Magic Kingdom were open for visitors like Cindy and Susan to enjoy on October 1st, 1971. Many of them are still operating to this day. FOX 35 dug through history to bring you information about each one.

Walt Disney Envisioned A Community Of Tomorrow

Nearly a month after the story broke, Florida Gov. Haydon Burns held a news conference in Orlando to introduce the man who would remake central Florida: Walt Disney. Orlando and Florida welcomed him with open arms. At the news conference, the governor pressed Disney for some hint about his plans for the massive site, but he wasn’t giving anything away.

“After taking a look at the land this morning,” Disney said. “I’d say we are starting from scratch.”

Walt Disney died a year later, and it was left to his brother Roy to fulfill his vision. The Disneys hired retired Army Gen., William Potter to oversee construction. Charles Lee has worked on environmental issues for decades with Audubon Florida and says Gen. Potter took a careful approach to preserving wetland areas on the site that Lee says was remarkable for its time.

“He designed a highly compartmentalized drainage system that stepped the water down and prevented over-drainage of a lot of the wetland areas,” Lee explains.

Building it cost some $400 million. When the official opening day came, Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom held a big celebration and parade. More than 1,000 high school band members, drawn from schools all over Florida, marched and played. The huge band was led by composer and playwright Meredith Wilson, who reprised “76 Trombones,” a hit from his musical, “The Music Man.”

The History Of Walt Disney World And Its Opening 50 Years Ago

This Day in History: Walt Disney World Resort Officially Opens 1971 ...

FOX 35 Special | Disney: 50 Years of Magic

FOX 35 News is counting down to Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary. In part one of a two-part series, we present “Disney: 50 Years of Magic.” We give you a behind-the-scenes look at the Disney Vault and look at how Walt Disney chose Orlando as home to Walt Disney World Resort and how he acquired the land he needed to build the Magic Kingdom.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Walt Disney World opened in Central Florida on October 1st, 1971, after years of anticipation. Thousands of guests entered Magic Kingdom, the first park to open at the resort, and were greeted with fun and fantasy around every corner.

In the 50 years since, the Florida resort went on to open three more theme parks, two water parks, dozens of resort hotels, and a massive retail, dining, and entertainment district.

It all started on November 15th, 1965. According to Disney, this is when Walt Disney and his brother, Roy O. Disney, officially announced the plans for their Florida project in a press conference held in Downtown Orlando. Almost a year later, on October 27th, 1966, Walt Disney filmed an outline for his Florida plans, including details on Walt Disney Worlds location.

The Hall Of Presidents

Disney confirmed that The Hall of Presidents was open when Magic Kingdom debuted in 1971. For the last 50 years, it has educated park guests on the formation of the United States and the nations struggles through a recalling of the countrys presidents.

The Hall of Presidents

The show, which is said to be 25 minutes long, has reportedly added nine presidents since opening in 1971. President Joe Biden is the most recent addition. However, there are only 45 presidents on stage because Grover Cleveland served two non-consecutive terms as both the 22nd and 24th President of the United States.

Another fun fact that Disney shared about the show is that the Abraham Lincoln figure actually debuted at the 1964 New York Worlds Fair.

Finding A Location For Disneyland

The first part of the project was to find a location. Disney hired the Stanford Research Institute to find an appropriate location that consisted of at least 100-acres was located near Los Angeles and could be reached by a freeway. The company found for Disney a 160-acre orange orchard in Anaheim, California.

What Was The Second Disney World Park To Open

Being the second Disney World Park to open, EPCOT actually opened a little earlier than everyone expected. EPCOT stands for Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow and it became Walt Disneys true legacy after his passing in 1966.

This park was entirely based around technology and showcased a community filled with futuristic inventions. After Walt Disney died from lung cancer at the age of 65 he never saw EPCOT grow from concept to reality. His brother Roy took over the project he passed away and thought this park would be a perfect example of Walts vision.

Dateline: Disneyland in HD (Disneyland Opening Day): July 17th, 1955

In the early 1960s, envoys were sent out to clandestinely purchase parcels of land across Central Florida. Walt Disney made it official in 1965.

At a packed press conference, with Florida Gov. Haydon Burns and Walts brother Roy by his side, Disney announced he was building another Disneyland, though on a much bigger scale.

On Oct. 1, 1971, Magic Kingdom opened at the Walt Disney World Resort. Florida has never been the same.

Disney World has since become the worlds most-visited tourist attraction. And its not a cheap one. On the low end, a five-day visit, including airfare, lodging and tickets, could cost about $3,500 for a family of four, according to the personal finance website GOBankingRates. And that doesnt include food, souvenirs and other amenities.

At the time, the construction of what at first was called Vacation Kingdom was estimated to cost $500 million to turn 27,000 acres of Florida scrub land into a complete family-oriented vacation center. In comparison, the modern incarnation of Disney is estimated to have spent $500 million for just one area, the Star Wars land that opened at Disneys Hollywood Studios two years ago.

Theme park expert and writer Arthur Levine said Disneys 50th anniversary offers a polarized nation a safe haven. For a brief while anyway, they can become the America for which Americans long, not the America that exists beyond the manicured grounds.

The Walt Disney World Monorail Also Opened That Day

While it still seems rather like something from the future today, in fact the Walt Disney World monorail has been operating for 50 years, just like the Magic Kingdom theme park to which it daily delivers and retrieves thousands of visitors. According to Disney Food Blog, the monorail’s first trip carrying members of the public took place on that momentous day of October 1, 1971. The monorail connects Magic Kingdom to several nearby hotels and can save visitors time and effort, especially as Disney World grows ever more crowded.

The Disney World Monorail System was closely modeled after the Disneyland Monorail System, which was the first such regularly operated mode of transportation in the entire Western Hemisphere when it opened in 1959, according to the OC Register. The Disney World monorail often ferries in excess of 150,000 people daily. Each monorail train is 230 feet long and at present there are 12 trains in operation, according to WD Magic. The trains travel at a maximum speed of 40 miles per hour on a few limited stretches of operation, but by and large the monorail trains move much slower. They traverse about 14.7 total miles of elevated track.

General Tips

Secure Your Tickets Before Your Trip

Many people leave to buy their tickets arriving in Orlando or even on the day of the park.

We do not in any way recommend that you do this for a variety of reasons, such as:

If you buy tickets on time, you will not be able to book your Disney FastPass + in advance.

You will not be able to schedule your park days as required at the time of a pandemic.

You will lose valuable minutes of park in line to buy your tickets.

AND MAINLY, you will pay more because tickets at the box office are more expensive than buying in advance!

So be sure to secure your tickets! Use the discount coupon PDP when purchasing your tickets on the Uncle Orlando Travel.

Or if you prefer, ask for a quote with a sales consultant directly on your whatsapp, just click here!
