Which US Disney park is right for you?
If your family has decided theyre ready to put their Mickey and Minnie ears on for your upcoming vacation, the natural next question becomes which US park to choose: do you make your way west to visit Walt Disneys original park, Disneyland in Anaheim, California, or do you flock south towards the Sunshine State to see Pluto and friends at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida?
On the surface, it might seem like the theme parks are just carbon copies of each other, situated on opposite coasts. But there are major differences between the two original Disney parks, and knowing a bit more about them can help you decide which park is right for your family.

When Did Walt Disney World Open
Walt Disney World opened on October 1, 1971, with the inauguration of its first theme park, Disneys Magic Kingdom park.
The Florida Project was created as a separate resort complex after the success of Disneyland in Anaheim, California. It was Walt Disneys dream project, though he died before its completion.
Walts older brother Roy O. Disney was instrumental in following through on the construction of the entertainment complex and upon completion, changed the name from Disneyworld to Walt Disney World in memory of his younger brother.

Which Park Should I Visit First
Choosing what Disney World park to visit first is completely subjective and depends on a variety of factors.
If you have never visited Walt Disney World before, we feel that the first park you should visit is Disneys Magic Kingdom. It is the original park here and definitely the most nostalgic. Even if you have been in Disney World for days, in our opinion, your vacation hasnt really started until you go to the Magic Kingdom.
Where you are staying also has a factor in what order you should visit the parks. Some guests like to do split-stays where you stay at multiple resorts during the trip and it can save time visiting the parks closest to your resort first.
If you are staying at an EPCOT-area hotel for part of the time, then it makes sense to visit EPCOT and Hollywood Studios while you are there. If you will be near the Magic Kingdom other days, then its best to go there at that time, etc.
The day of the week also can play a factor in what days you visit each park. For example, during the festival season you want to avoid EPCOT on the weekends since many locals come out and the lines can be double or triple what they are on a weekday.
Lastly, there may be a special event at one of the parks you want to go to or you might only be able to get dining reservations to a specific restaurant on certain days of the trip. In that case, plan your park days around those important events.
Which Park Is Best In Disney World
Which park is best at Disney World is highly subjective and will vary from person to person. Our all-time favorite park is EPCOT, but the park is very different now from when we were young. We will wait until the big EPCOT expansion project is finished before judging it.
Right now Disneys Hollywood Studios is by far the most popular park, with thousands of people coming each day to see Star Wars: Galaxys Edge and the Rise of the Resistance ride.
Our Disney World Rides and Attractions Guide will give you more info and tips for all the rides.

Not only is it innovative and educational, theres alwayssomething new for you to learn and enjoy by touring the countriesaround World Showcase.
If were going strictly off of pure popularity and classicDisney charm, then the Magic Kingdom is definitely the best Disney theme park inOrlando.

Will There Be A 5th Disney Park
The last theme park built at the Walt Disney World Resort was Disneys Animal Kingdom in 1998. Since that time, people have been speculating if there will ever be a 5th park built.
Even though rumors have been swirling around for years, at the moment, there are no plans to build a 5th Disney World park. That doesnt mean it will never happen, but it wont happen for a very long time.
For more info, read our post about if a 5th Disney World Park will ever be built and when it could happen.

What Is Coming To Disney World In 2022
As Walt Disney believed, its always exciting to look to the future and see whats coming next. Even though we always have a ball enjoying the attractions and experiences that are already in Walt Disney World, we cant wait to see all the new things coming to the parks.
Here is a list of attractions and more coming to Disney World in 2022:
- Cirque du Soleil Drawn to Life
- Walt Disney World Swan Reserve
Did you notice a theme? Most of the new attractions at Disney World have been and are going to be in EPCOT. Thats because the whole park is in the middle of a huge expansion project unlike any Disney World park has had before. We talked about this more in our EPCOT Expansion & Changes post.
We cant wait for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind as we are really intrigued by a backward-launch roller coaster and want to see how they integrate these hilarious characters into the ride. Some of the other new rides got pushed off past 2022 and we arent yet sure when the TRON Lightcycle Run coaster is opening. It could be 2022, or even 2023.
Still, what Disney has on the schedule for this year should draw guests in.
Make sure to read our post on New Rides & Attractions Coming to Disney World, which goes into more detail of everything to look forward to in the next few years.
What County Is Disney World In
Walt Disney World is located in parts of Orange County and parts of Osceola County, Florida. The majority of the attractions and money-making ventures are located in Orange County due to a tax restriction on making money in Osceola County.
Disney World is a large project and takes up around 47 square miles. It is almost twice the size of the island of Manhattan. Walt Disney World is significantly larger than other Disney parks, including Disneyland. Other than the park that takes up the land that is owned and operated by the Walt Disney corporation, there are also wetlands, wildlife, spill off areas and specific environmental protection areas. There is a bus station that also serves as the terminal for the monorail. The official address of Disney World is Lake Buena Vista, Florida. This city has a sister city called Bay Lake. Combined, these two cities are owned by Walt Disney Corporation, but they function in the same way as most other cities. There is a quasi governmental scheme, taxes are paid to the state and there are post offices for both cities. In order for the park city to remain a true city, employees of the park are encouraged to live within the city limits of Lake Buena Vista. Disney security is a true police force and town officials are all Disney cast members.

So How Did The Disney World Tunnels Come About
Rumor Control has it that as Mr Walt Disney was wandering through Tomorrowland in Disneyland California, a Cast Member dressed as a cowboy walked by him on his way to his position at Frontierland.
One glance told Walt that a cowboy dressed in checked shirt, bandana and cowboy boots twirling a six shooter looked totally out of place in Tomorrowland.
This was supposed to be the future world and not the middle 1800s.
Walt racked his brain for a solution.
Minnie and Mickey hand in hand in the Disney Utilidoors
He didnt want anything distracting visitors from their magical experience. How could his cast members be transported to their designated work stations without being seen by the general public?
An underworld Disney was the answer. An impossibility in Disneyland California which was too small. But the much larger Walt Disney World planned for Florida was a different story.
So plans were hatched to build these Disney World tunnels under the new Magic Kingdom.
Or rather, to build Magic Kingdom on top of the underworld tunnels.
The projected cost of creating the Magic Kingdom was rumored to be $4 million. The addition of the underworld tunnels raised that to $9 million.
Disney started creating the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida in 1967
Due to Floridas high water table, digging out a basement would have been practically impossible. Disney improvised by building the tunnels at ground level and creating the public world right on top.

Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe
- In March 2010, a 4 year old boy from San Diego, California suffered severe face and neck burns after being scalded by a tray of hot nacho cheese. The accident occurred when the boy sat down to dinner in an unstable chair and grabbed a food tray to prevent himself from falling, resulting in the cheese falling off the tray and into his lap. The childs parents sued Disney, with their attorney claiming that “the cheese should not have been that hot” and that Disney made no effort “to regulate and monitor the temperature of the nacho cheese which was being served to young children.” A Disney representative commented on the incident: “It’s unfortunate when any child is injured. We just received notice of the lawsuit and are currently reviewing it.” The family settled out of court in 2011.
