Rare Stole Away Mickey But Eidos’ May Have The Last Smile With Its Disney Kart Racer

And yet, could this be a Kart game that controls well? Now that’s not something you see everyday… but I do.

If you picked up on that joke as one of the many zingers thrown off on The Jungle Cruise ride at Disneyland, this game is perfect for you. Eidos’ Disney Magical Racing Tour may not be a great innovation for videogaming, but as a tour that races through some of the most memorable attractions found in the Magic Kingdom, this game earns a spot in my heart purely for sentimental value. The developers at Crystal Dynamics have nailed every landmark and visual flair of Disney World, while rearranging and enhancing each ride to make for a fast, fun game.

Gameplay Did you know that, somewhere deep in the heart of Disney World, is a spectacular device called the Fireworks Machine that sprays glorious rockets, explosions, and sparklers into the air every night at the end of each Disney day? Neither did I, until I heard that Chip and his bumbling partner Dale accidentally ruined the machine by dropping acorns into it. It blew up into dozens of pieces, and now it’s up to Chip ‘n Dale to pick up those pieces and rebuild the machine before the night’s show. Guess how they’re going to get that done? Yep, they’ve decided to hold a Walt Disney World Quest Magical Racing Tour to collect all the strewn mechanisms and doo-dads!

The Forgotten Charms Of Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour

Since 3D Crazy Coaster graced the Vectrex in 1983, theme park video games have come in two flavors – simulation and minigame collection. Disneys done both, from Adventures in the Magic Kingdom on the Nintendo Entertainment System to the Coaster series on PC. There are highs and lows of both styles – Virtual Magic Kingdom, a glorified ad campaign, was so beloved it lives on as a fan-made recreation – but it’s the outliers that are most interesting.

Of those few, Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour is the farthest afield. It’s also a contradiction down to its CD-ROM soul – a one-of-a-kind knockoff.

Without Super Mario Kart, there would be no , but without there would be no kart racing as we know it.

Released in all territories within six months of the Nintendo 64’s release, provided the new console with its first multiplayer killer app. Instead of taking impatient turns running around Super Mario 64, players could now run into three other friends simultaneously. It wasn’t just more play for the money – it was free advertising for Nintendo’s 3D miracle machine and boy did it work.

remains the second best-selling game of its console and the fourth of its generation. The legacy of the series, twelve releases and four generations later, is unquestionable.

The fallout of the series is a lot easier to question.

There may be no greater must-play for Walt Disney World die-hards.

Where the game shines in spite of its lack of authenticity in areas, is with its visuals, track design and sound quality. Youll race around 13 unique tracks that are based on Disneyland attractions such as the famous Splash Mountain, the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, the Rock n roll coaster and Disney Studios Florida to name a few. Each area is well presented and genuinely looks recognisable when compared to the rides or attractions themselves. Sure they are hyperbolized for the sake of fun but you know exactly what each track is meant to represent and its a great effort.

Then when referring to the sound quality, you get exactly what you would expect from a Disney licensed titles. The renditions of Yo Ho, a Pirates Life For Me or Its a Small World are quintessentially Disney in their delivery. This coupled with apt sound effects for each character, power-up or new environment, this all culminates to give an audio masterclass, especially considering the time of release.

At first glance, Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour appears to be a very exciting game that both young and old will enjoy. After all, most people enjoy Disney World and a game based on the theme park should be equally interesting.

Unfortunately, the optimism soon disappears. First, the gameplay is very similar to other cart racing games popularized by Mario Kart and it’s apparent that the developers were unable to add anything new to this particular genre. While the gameplay is enjoyable, the lack of “real” Disney characters is a big disappointment.

The basic premise of the game is somewhat nonsensical. A machine has been destroyed and pieces of it are hidden throughout the park. This part of the story isn’t too difficult to swallow but the idea that racing other characters somehow allows you to get the pieces is somewhat lame — why would winning a race help you find missing pieces? This isn’t a problem for younger players who are interested in the arcade action but the concept is ludicrous and contrived.

Graphics: The graphics fit the genre nicely and the levels are well conceived.

Sound: About as average as it gets with no innovation.
