Rooms Are The Biggest And Most Expensive

Standard rooms are the Grand Floridian are the largest standard hotel rooms at Walt Disney World at around 440 square feet. But the bad news is that this resort is also pretty consistently one of the most expensive options.

Outside of a sale, these days its quite common that standard outer building rooms at Grand Floridian go for $600 to $700 per night. Those with a theme park view are often in the $800 to $1,000 per night range and club-level rooms in the main building are often $1,000+ per night.

These prices are a big part of why I still havent actually stayed here yet on a paid stay or actual vacation.

Inspiration Around The Country

Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

While the Grand Floridian is indeed a beach resort, themed to the golden age of Victorian vacations along Florida coastlines, the resorts exterior was inspired by resorts from around the U.S.

The Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, is one of the most renowned instances of a white-sided and red-roofed Victorian-inspired resort.

Though a New Hampshire resort would obviously come with different amenities than a Florida beach resort, the Mount Washington Resort is authentic to the time period the Grand Floridian replicates .

Another source of inspiration for the resorts exterior came from the West Coast with the Hotel del Coronado in Coronado, CA.

Like the Mount Washington Resort, Hotel del Coronado opened in the timeframe the Grand Floridian is based on, even earlier in 1888.

Much of the Florida-specific inspiration from the resort came from the Belleview-Biltmore Resort and Spa in Belleair, which opened in 1897 and was unfortunately demolished in 2015 save for a couple of the original buildings that were registered historic sites due to investor disputes.

The Belleview-Biltmore was constructed by a Victorian businessman named Henry B. Plant, who in 1893 gained ownership of a railroad line that he began rapidly expanding throughout Florida.

During the 1940s, the Belleview-Biltmore was used for housing during the war effort. Following the war, it never recovered to its original grandeur.

Disneys Grand Floridian Resort & Spa: A Disney World Resort

I know when I think of luxury at Walt Disney World, I think of the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa for sure! The property opened on June 28, 1988 as the Grand Floridian Beach Resort. The name changed to Disneys Grand Floridian Resort & Spa during the fall of 1997. The Grand Floridian was inspired by the Victorian era beach resorts built along Floridas east coast during the late 19th century and early 20th century.

The Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is also one of the Monorail Resorts, meaning when you are a guest here, you are able to take the monorail to Magic Kingdom, Epcot, or one of the other monorail resorts . Please note, there are several different monorails and you may have to switch monorails depending on your destination! You can also take the boat to the Magic Kingdom, or as with all resorts you also have the option of taking the buses to the parks as well.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort Overview

Billed as Disneys flagship resort, Disneys Grand Floridian Resort and Spa is exquisite with its combination of Victorian style and modern day amenities. The inspiration of the resort comes from San Diegos venerable Hotel Del Coronado and can be felt from its verandas, dormers and cupolas, red-gabled roofs and intricate gingerbread trim.

A breathtaking 5-story-high atrium lobby is capped with light filtering stained-glass domes. Glistening chandeliers, an aviary and a grand piano add to the lavish ambiance here. This distinct form extends to the monorail stop that is designed to resemble a Victorian train station.

Upon their arrival at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, guests are escorted by a cast member to the front desk of the main building for their check-in process. If you’ve arrived via Disney’s Magical Express, check-in for the Villas can be completed here as well. Guests who opted for Resort-to-Room Check-In may go directly to their villa instead after their room number has been communicated via text or email. For those staying at the Grand Floridian for the first time, it is worth visiting the front desk for the full experience. Youll be given important information about the resort grounds and amenities including for those at the Villas.

Walt Disney World Grand Floridian Rooms Amp Up The Amenities

The Walt Disney World Grand Floridian takes its role as leader of the Disney resorts quite seriously. Upon entering our Disney World GF room, a welcoming light was on as was the television, tuned into the park hours. While some may decry this as a waste of electricity, it was a nice way to enter the room, a simple pleasantry that was missed later in the week when we switched to the Animal Kingdom Lodge and entered a dark room on the first night of our visit.

Overall, the Walt Disney World Grand Floridian resort hotel goes above and beyond other resorts in welcoming guests to the room. Upon entering, we found a towel folded in the signature Mickey Mouse shape waiting on the bed with a welcome letter, inviting us to enjoy all of the magic of a Disney World stay.

There were other small amenities that made the stay worthy of flagship status as well. The rooms are bright and airy, and while a few may look onto the parking lot and driveway, the majority offer a pleasing view of the lush grounds, the theme park or the lagoon. Our lagoon view room in the Boca Chica building faced the Contemporary Resort but afforded us a full view of the Magic Kingdom, including the nightly firework show.

Inside the rooms, we found plenty of space to spread out. Our king bed room also had a sleep sofa which, when extended, did take up a good portion of the empty area in the room, but we still found it easy to move around. An additional chair made for a comfortable place to sit throughout our stay.

Grand Floridian Villas & Deluxe Studios

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa Overview | Walt Disney World Resort

While guestrooms and suites at Disneys Grand Floridian Resort feel warm and inviting, DVC Grand Floridian villas and studios are cozy in a different kind of way. In general, all studios and villas at the Grand Floridian include a DVD player, flat-panel TV, hairdryer, iron, ironing board, coffee maker, refrigerator , microwave, toaster, in-room safe, telephone with voicemail, free Wi-Fi, and a balcony. Christmas At The Walt Disney World Grand Floridian

Since our stay at the Walt Disney World Grand Floridian was close to Christmas, the resort was in full festive attire, including full beds of red poinsettias. Bringing the season home is important to a flagship resort, so the lobby of each of the six buildings was decked out with its own decorated and lit tree. While not as spectacular as the display in the main lobby, it was a homey touch that made our stay feel just that much more special.

Another hallmark of Christmas at the Grand Floridian is the signature life-sized Gingerbread house. Coming in most years around fourteen feet tall, it takes a lot of flour, sugar and time to create this holiday spectacle, but its a touch that is certainly worthy of flagship status in our book.

Accommodations And Room Types

The Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is one of the resorts in the Magic Kingdom resort area and has 867 guest rooms on property.

It is also home to one of the newer DVC expansions completed in 2013. The Villas continue the theme of Victorian-era Palm Beach resorts found in the Grand Floridian while catering to the needs of DVC guests. The expansion makes the Grand Floridian the second monorail resort to receive a DVC addition, following Bay Lake Tower at Disneys Contemporary Resort which opened in 2009.

There are 3 different room types, similar to the other Disney Resorts. Standard View, Lagoon View, and Theme Park View. The price of the rooms depends on your views, with the least expensive option being the Standard, and the most expensive being Theme Park views. Whether or not the view is worth the price is up to each individual. But, to be able to see the Wishes Fireworks with the songs being played on your television in your own room could be paradise in and of itself!

Bathrooms are large, with plenty of counter space and fluffy towels. Two shelves under the sink provide a small amount of storage. As well as, a separate dressing area next to the bathroom includes two sinks and enough counter space to fit most of your toiletries. The dressing area includes a sliding door that separates it from the sleeping area.

Senses – A Disney Spa is Grand Floridian’s spa. Senses includes 15 treatment rooms offering a multitude of treatments and featuring Florida citrus and botanicals. A unique touch to this spa is that each treatment, or “Journey” as they call them, includes a small glass of a fruity elixir. Each Journey has its own flavored drink and this flavor carries through to the end of your Journey when you receive a very small gel that contains the same flavors. Guests are encouraged to book ahead, they may do so by calling 407-WDW-SPAS .

Senses Spa.

Senses also has a fitness center. It is open 24 hours a day but attendants are only available from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Watercraft Rentals are available for use in Seven Seas Lagoon 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Kayaks, sailboats, pedal boats, and Sea Raycers can be rented. Prices vary. All rentals can be purchased in a booth near the Sugarloaf Key and Conch Key buildings.

Grand Floridian has a number of gift shops. Including Sandy Cove. As you’d expect from a Disney gift shop, Sandy Cove has a decent collection of souvenirs ranging from small trinkets such as keychains and pens, to embroidered jackets and Disney princess dresses. Prices for these items are about what you’d pay in the theme parks or Disney Springs.

Walkers, joggers and runners can find a jogging trail. The trail is a 1-mile jogging path located near the Main Building. The trail starts at Grand Floridian and ends at the Polynesian Resort.

Walt Disney World Files Permit To Re

Walt Disney World has filed a permit with the South Florida Water Management District as part of the ongoing construction surrounding World Drive in front of the Transportation and Ticket Center. The project aims to improve traffic flow heading into Magic Kingdom and surrounding resorts.

This new permit shows plans to re-route Floridian Way around a parking lot across from Disneys Grand Floridian Resort. This will create a larger patch of land open between Magic Kingdom and Disneys Grand Floridian Resort, possibly for a future project. The space would allow room for a new resort, such as the rumored volcano-themed resort or other similar projects.

That said, nothing has been announced for the area.
