Tips To Make The Most Of Your Disney World Character Dining Experience

Ranking Disney World’s BEST Character Meals

Want to make the most of the time you have with your favorite character? Keep reading for top memory-making tips!

  • Communicate with your waiter. Celebrating a birthday or another occasion? Need a drink refill? Have allergy concerns? Take advantage of Disney’s amazing customer service by communicating with your waiter for an extra-special experience.
  • Bring your autograph book. Besides the few experiences that provide materials for the characters to autograph, it will be up to you to bring your own autograph books. These can be purchased throughout the park, but you can also find many cheaper options online before you leave. A book filled with various signatures and notes may be your most prized souvenir from your trip!
  • Be flexible. There is no guarantee that you will see any specific character during your dining experience. The one exception to this is when a dining experience is named after a specific character, in which case that character will always be there. Besides these few instances, it’s best to not get your heart set on any one Disney Princess, any one Winnie-the-Pooh character, etc. Go into the experience with a flexible attitude, and make the most of the characters you do see!
  • Disney World Character Dining

Disney World character dining can be one of the most charming experiences youll have on a Disney vacation. Some of these character meals will provide the opportunity to make memories that will last a lifetime. I know because I have a few of my own.

When it comes to dining with characters at Disney, there are quite a few choices. In fact, theres a lot of information that the average guest doesnt know in advance of reserving these character meals.

This Disney character dining guide covers all of the character meals at the Walt Disney World Resort. It discusses everything from the best character meals to the cost of meals. Ive also included a section to help you choose which one might work best for your family.

Dining at Disney can make or break your vacation, depending on your choices. Hopefully, this review will provide you with the necessary information to plan and enjoy a wonderful meal.

*Many of the Disney World character meals have been put on hold or modified at this time. The menu for each dining location links to Disneys site. It will show whether or not the restaurant is available. This article was last updated in December 2021.

    Indoor Or Outdoor Dining

If you are visiting Disneyland during a pleasant time of year for weather, having outdoor dining as an option during your character meal could be a big draw. But if you are visiting during an Anaheim heat wave , you may prefer a location where you are guaranteed indoor seating and air conditioning.

And of course in 2021, everyones comfort levels with indoor vs. outdoor dining is a constantly moving target due to health considerations. So its especially vital to know what restaurants offer what.

If indoor dining is a must-have, choose one of the hotel restaurants, as all of them have only indoor seating. The in-park character meal at Plaza Inn has both indoor and outdoor spaces. While you can make a request to be inside or out, there are no guarantees on where your table will be. That said, Disney cast members have been very good at accommodating guest preferences for outdoor seating in 2021, so you should be able to get an outdoor table if that is important to you. Just be prepared that you may need to wait a bit longer.

Best Character Dining at Walt Disney World

Meals with Mickey and Minnie will return for breakfast and brunch.

Disney fans are now able to begin their days with Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and more favorites as character dining has returned to Disneyland.

Starting Thursday, Disney fans can start their days off right with the characters they love at “Mickey’s Tales of Adventure breakfast,” which will take place at the Storytellers Café at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, according to Disney.

Character dining will return for breakfast and brunch with dishes like Mickey-shaped waffles, mini pastries, eggs Benedict with spiced hollandaise, French toast casserole, and mocktails. Breakfast will be available every day from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and brunch will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays through Sundays.

On Aug. 12, the park will then add a “Minnie and Friends Breakfast” at the Plaza Inn on Main Street, U.S.A. Reservations for the Plaza Inn will open “soon,” but no date has yet been set.

Both character breakfasts will be a buffet experience, according to Disney.

But while character dining may be returning, it won’t look exactly as it did pre-coronavirus pandemic. The experience will be modified, Disney shared with Travel + Leisure, and guests will be doing more smiling and waving and selfie-taking than greeting their favorite characters one on one.

While character dining is coming back to Disneyland, it has already returned with some modifications to Disney World in Florida.

Hollywood & Vine Disney Junior Play N Dine Breakfast

Characters at Breakfast Disney Junior Characters such as Sofia the First, Doc McStuffins, Vampirina, and Roadster Racer Goofy

Character dining available during breakfast only.

The reason we loved this one was because its the only character dining that includes Disney Junior characters. When we went a few years back it was actually Sofia the First, Doc McStuffins, Jake, and Handy Manny but its been recently updated to include some of the new Disney Junior favorites like Vampirina and Roadster Racer Goofy!

My son watches Disney Junior all the time and loved seeing some of his favorite characters come to life. And we were able to get a reservation at 10:30 when they were just toward the end of the mealtime, so the restaurant was fairly empty. It gave us more time to enjoy with the characters as well as try out the breakfast and lunch menu items!

The food here was similar to Crystal Palace, pretty standard buffet fare with some healthy and unique options like an arugula salad mixed in.

At lunch and dinnertime, Hollywood & Vine offers different seasonal Minnie + Pals character dining options. You can find more info for those here.

Breakfast At Topolino Terrace At Disneys Riviera Resort

Riviera Resort is Disneys newest resort hotel that opened in late 2019. Its a very grown-up and refined property that doesnt at all feel like youre at a theme park.

Topolino Terrace is a French- and Italian-inspired restaurant located on the top floor of the Riviera Resort. Each morning, it hosts a character breakfast thats quite the civilized way to see Mickey and friends.

Adults get a pastry basket, juice, coffee and an entrée from a selection such as smoked salmon, quiche gruyère, sour cream waffles or the wild mushroom scramble I ordered above for $42.

Meals for kids up to 9 years old will cost $27 and come with items such as Mickey waffle dippers, eggs or fruit and yogurt.

Here, youll get to see Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Daisy in their best Mediterranean outfits.

What Happens At A Disney World Character Meal In 2021 And Beyond

Character dining at Walt Disney World in 2021, and probably well into 2022, is certainly not the same experience that it used to be. Before the age of COVID-19, characters would come to your table, pose for photographs and even sign autographs.

Some of our favorite Disney World memories were experienced during a Walt Disney World character meal. Like the time that Goofy took my daughter in her Red Sox t-shirt over to meet a boy of similar age dressed in a Yankees shirt. Or the time that Donald flirted with the women in our group only to be shut down by Daisy.

You cant put a price on interactions like these, but they wont be a part of the Disney World Character dining today. Disney World dining in the age of COVID-19 must meet CDC guidelines, so characters will enter the restaurant, wave and pose for pictures at a distance. As of December 2021, some restaurants have begun calling groups up by table, allowing them to pose for pictures, as long as they remained at least 6 feet away.

On the other hand, a Walt Disney World character meal does allow you to get closer to the characters than any experience youll have within the parks, and its probably one of the few chances to have your photo snapped with one Disneys celebrities, even if they are standing three to six feet behind you.
