Under the sea ride ( Disney World)

Amid all of the park hype and inflated expectations, it might help to state what The Little Mermaid ride is not. Unlike Toy Story Mania and other whiz-bang, high-tech attractions, it isn’t an interactive shoot-em-up ride. It also doesn’t include 3D glasses, 4D effects, motion-base platforms, Harry Potter-like robotic-arm vehicles, high-speed thrills, percussive explosions, or any of the other ride trick-outs that designers have incorporated into many modern-day, high-profile attractions. It is, however, an old-school, sweet-natured dark ride, the kind that Disney pioneered and perfected with attractions such as “it’s a small world” and Peter Pan’s Flight.

Here’s something else Mermaid is not: It isn’t an E-ticket ride. Despite its rumored $100 million price tag , which would make it among the more costly park attractions, Mermaid is a relatively modest ride. At the Disney California Adventure grand opening event, one of the Imagineers who helped develop the attraction characterized it as a D+-ticket ride. That sounds about right to us.

That’s not to say that Mermaid doesn’t incorporate some impressive technology to help tell its story. In fact, its animatronic figures represent a next-gen evolution of attraction design wizardry. The highly fluid likenesses of characters such as Ariel and the sea witch Ursula, with their multiple points of articulation, are a far cry from the crude animation of the tiki birds, Disney’s first foray into animatronics.

Queue Information For Under The Sea ~ Journey Of The Little Mermaid

As you approach the outdoors queue leading to Prince Erics castle, youll pass by a shipwrecked boat with Ariel as the figurehead . The first part of the queue is outdoors and uncovered. It winds past spectacular waterfalls, tidal pools, rocky coastal cliffs and treasure.

At one point the path takes you into a cave which feels wide and open. At first it has openings letting in natural light during the day. As you go further it becomes enclosed and lit by hanging lamps, but theres still a wide, open feeling, and we didnt find it to be dark. It can be dim in places though, especially after dark.

This video shows the queue as well as the Journey of the Little Mermaid ride itself:

More about the queue: The theming in the later part of the mainstream queue includes views of Ariels treasure trove of human things. Theres a very clever interactive game in the treasure trove. Tiny blue crabs wait for guests to point to the human item that doesnt fit in with the other human items in that area, and the crabs carry it away.

What Is The History Of Under The Sea Journey Of The Little Mermaid

When The Little Mermaid debuted in theaters in 1989, it was a massive hit and ushered in a revival of Walt Disney Animation films. Imagineers wanted to create a Little Mermaid dark ride in the 90s, but their ideas were never realized. Instead, The Little Mermaids presence in the parks was relegated to mostly parades, character meets, and the Voyage of The Little Mermaid show at Disneys Hollywood Studios. However, a computer-generated ride-through of Imagineerings original plans for a dark ride were included in the 2006 Platinum Edition DVD of The Little Mermaid.

It wasnt until 2011 that guests were finally able to journey under the sea with The Little Mermaid: Ariels Undersea Adventure attraction which debuted at Disney California Adventure. Walt Disney Worlds Magic Kingdom received a nearly twin version of the attraction with the parks New Fantasyland on December 6, 2012.

Boarding And Ride Car Information For Under The Sea ~ Journey Of The Little Mermaid

Guests walk on a moving walkway to board their clamshell vehicle. The walkway moves at the same speed as the ride cars. If needed, the walkway can be slowed or even stopped, though theyll only do this if absolutely necessary. Let a cast member know if you need this.

Once you board the vehicle, a cast member will tell you to bring down the bar in front of you. Keep in mind that it will lock wherever you put it, so try to bring it down to a comfortable level since you wont be able to raise it once its lowered.

Wheelchair/scooter info: The Little Mermaid is one of the newest rides in Magic Kingdom. It has accessible vehicles that are similar to others with fold down ramps, but theyre improved. The Imagineers took what they learned from the other vehicles and used it to design them with easier access. The wheelchair accessible clamshells load on a different angle which allows the ramp onto the ride car to be longer. This makes it less steep and easier to drive onto with a wheelchair. The accessible vehicles also have a little more space inside. Youll also find that the moving walkway here is wider than that on other similar rides.

ECV riders and wheelchair riders who wish to transfer will be asked to park nearby and walk. If you leave a mobility device at the boarding area, it will be waiting for you where you unload.

When Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955, “the happiest place on Earth” wasn’t exactly ready for showtime. Given that exactly one year and a day had passed since the first shovel of dirt had been moved, some corners of Walt’s park were just plain unfinished. To Walt’s thinking, Tomorrowland was the worst of it. The land had fallen so far behind early on in the park’s design that he’d simply decided to halt its construction altogether, determined to focus on the rest of the park first.

But come January 1955 just six months before the park’s debut he reversed course. Tomorrowland was quickly cobbled together by bringing in corporate sponsors who would be willing to exhibit their wares, like the Kaiser Aluminum Hall of Fame, the Dutch Boy Paint Color Gallery, and the Crane Bathroom of Tomorrow.

Image: Disney

Only a small number of Disney-produced attractions were present in the land, but Walt made a clever suggestion that shaped Tomorrowland’s lineup for years. Given that 20,000 Leagues had been a massive hit for the studio a year prior, designers began disassembling the sets from 20,000 Leagues and shipping them to Disneyland, where they were re-assembled as a walkthrough attraction just inside Tomorrowland’s entrance.

Housed in the circular center of the showbuilding south along Tomorrowland’s entry , the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea exhibit was an A-ticket, costing 10 cents for entry.

Why Did They Close 20000 Leagues Under The Sea At Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World:From robert smith

There was some rumers of bringing the ride back, however, I would not be suprised if the new ride featured “Star Tours” type of equipment. “Star Tours” uses an aircraft simulator type vehicle with video screens. This “Star Tours” type of equipment can be found at many amusement parks taking passengers on many different type of “rides”

They are bringing it back to Disneyland right now, in a version very similar to its original, but with a Finding Nemo theme.

From Erik YatesFrom Sean Rust

At first, they were going to do a rehab on the attraction, and the ADA came in and informed Disney that the type of refurbishment they wanted to do would constitute new construction, forcing Disney to comply with ADA laws, meaning they would have to find a way for the subs to accommodate a wheelchair. This was the first setback.

The second setback was the water itself. Two main problems:

First, there were some structural problems where water was leaking into the utlidors below

Second, the water, had corroded many of the mechanics and metal parts of the ride Disney could not reopen after they closed for rehab b/c of this corrosion, nor could they rebuild the corroded parts w/o making the attraction ADA compliant….

Ariel Under the Sea Voyage ride Disney World

Seeing the success of the Submarine Voyage in Disneyland, a sister attraction was high on Walt Disneys list for his Florida project. He envisioned the new ride to be similar in concept to the Disneyland version, but with more space, Walt believed Imagineers could achieve an even greater level of detail in creating a totally immersive experience for guests.

With the deadline of set for the opening of the Walt Disney World Resort, Imagineers, along with a large team of contractors and construction workers, had their work cut out for them. Due to a number of unforeseen challenges in creating the lagoon and getting the submarines to properly function along the track, this E-Ticket did not open with the rest of the park.

Just two weeks later, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea opened after the rest of the park on October 14, 1971. Guests were thankfully impressed by not only the physicality of the attraction appearing to dive underwater, but also with the size of the attraction and the attention to detail.

In 1971, the area occupied by 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea amounted to about one quarter of the total space in Fantasyland. Compared to other attractions in the Magic Kingdom at the time, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea could not be missed, so guests wandering through Fantasyland were instantly intrigued by it.

The 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Magic Kingdom attraction was based on the 1954 film
