20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage was an attraction at the Magic Kingdom theme park at Walt Disney World from 1971 through 1994. Based on the characters and settings of the 1954 Disney film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, it was a re-theming of the Submarine Voyage attraction at Disneyland. The ride involved a 20-minute submarine ride through a lagoon filled with sea life and mermaids.
Queue Information For Under The Sea ~ Journey Of The Little Mermaid
As you approach the outdoors queue leading to Prince Erics castle, youll pass by a shipwrecked boat with Ariel as the figurehead . The first part of the queue is outdoors and uncovered. It winds past spectacular waterfalls, tidal pools, rocky coastal cliffs and treasure.
At one point the path takes you into a cave which feels wide and open. At first it has openings letting in natural light during the day. As you go further it becomes enclosed and lit by hanging lamps, but theres still a wide, open feeling, and we didnt find it to be dark. It can be dim in places though, especially after dark.
This video shows the queue as well as the Journey of the Little Mermaid ride itself:
More about the queue: The theming in the later part of the mainstream queue includes views of Ariels treasure trove of human things. Theres a very clever interactive game in the treasure trove. Tiny blue crabs wait for guests to point to the human item that doesnt fit in with the other human items in that area, and the crabs carry it away.

Leagues Under The Sea In The Magic Kingdom
Seeing the success of the Submarine Voyage in Disneyland, a sister attraction was high on Walt Disneys list for his Florida project. He envisioned the new ride to be similar in concept to the Disneyland version, but with more space, Walt believed Imagineers could achieve an even greater level of detail in creating a totally immersive experience for guests.
With the deadline of set for the opening of the Walt Disney World Resort, Imagineers, along with a large team of contractors and construction workers, had their work cut out for them. Due to a number of unforeseen challenges in creating the lagoon and getting the submarines to properly function along the track, this E-Ticket did not open with the rest of the park.
Just two weeks later, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea opened after the rest of the park on October 14, 1971. Guests were thankfully impressed by not only the physicality of the attraction appearing to dive underwater, but also with the size of the attraction and the attention to detail.
In 1971, the area occupied by 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea amounted to about one quarter of the total space in Fantasyland. Compared to other attractions in the Magic Kingdom at the time, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea could not be missed, so guests wandering through Fantasyland were instantly intrigued by it.
The 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Magic Kingdom attraction was based on the 1954 film
Be Part Of This World
Amid all of the park hype and inflated expectations, it might help to state what The Little Mermaid ride is not. Unlike Toy Story Mania and other whiz-bang, high-tech attractions, it isn’t an interactive shoot-em-up ride. It also doesn’t include 3D glasses, 4D effects, motion-base platforms, Harry Potter-like robotic-arm vehicles, high-speed thrills, percussive explosions, or any of the other ride trick-outs that designers have incorporated into many modern-day, high-profile attractions. It is, however, an old-school, sweet-natured dark ride, the kind that Disney pioneered and perfected with attractions such as “it’s a small world” and Peter Pan’s Flight.
Here’s something else Mermaid is not: It isn’t an E-ticket ride. Despite its rumored $100 million price tag , which would make it among the more costly park attractions, Mermaid is a relatively modest ride. At the Disney California Adventure grand opening event, one of the Imagineers who helped develop the attraction characterized it as a D+-ticket ride. That sounds about right to us.
That’s not to say that Mermaid doesn’t incorporate some impressive technology to help tell its story. In fact, its animatronic figures represent a next-gen evolution of attraction design wizardry. The highly fluid likenesses of characters such as Ariel and the sea witch Ursula, with their multiple points of articulation, are a far cry from the crude animation of the tiki birds, Disney’s first foray into animatronics.
What Happened To The Lagoon
For a while, the lagoon remained in place after 20,000 Leagues closed. A portion of the lagoon was rethemed to The Little Mermaid, and served as a meet-and-greet with Ariel the mermaid. Ariels father, King Triton, resided in the water nearby.
In 2004, after ten years without swimming submarines, the lagoon was filled in. Ariel still met guests in her grotto, but King Triton and his watery neighborhood were now high and dry. Poohs Playful Spot, a playground for small children, opened in a portion of the former lagoon space, nearby to where The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh attraction had opened in 1999. Poohs Playful Spot closed in 2010, in preparation for Magic Kingdoms New Fantasyland expansion. But Poohs tree survived, moved just outside his attraction.
Ariel got the boot in 2010, when her grotto was removed in preparation for the New Fantasyland expansion. Ariel returned for meet-and-greets adjacent to her attraction, Under the Sea Journey of The Little Mermaid, when it opened in 2012.
The space that the lagoon once occupied is now filled by a combination of New Fantasyland attractions, including Under the Sea Journey of The Little Mermaid, Be Our Guest restaurant, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Under The Sea: Journey Of The Little Mermaid
|Supervise children at all times.|
Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid takes guests through the story and the music of the classic Disney movie, The Little Mermaid. As one of the centerpiece attractions of New Fantasyland, Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid is a clone of the Disney California Adventure attraction, The Little Mermaid: Ariels Undersea Adventure. The rides themselves are virtually identical, but the exterior and queue are very different.
The ride takes you through the story of The Little Mermaid through the songs from the movie.
The story begins as guests walk through the caves and rock work that lead to the beach front Castle of Prince Eric. Once guests have boarded their vehicle Scuttle the Seagull introduces them to the story as one of his favorites.
After the introduction by Scuttle, our clamshells descend under water through the use of a projection effect on the back of our clamshells and surrounding area. While in the descent Ariel first appears on a screen swimming around with Flounder and guests can begin to hear her singing Part of Your World. The vehicles descend through the rocks to find an animatronic Ariel and Flounder surrounded by all her stuff and continuing the song. Amongst the items included is a statue of Prince Eric striking a pose.
The next scene features an image of Ursula dying in the background and silhouettes of Ariel and Prince Eric kissing while a heart is drawn around them.

Boarding And Ride Car Information For Under The Sea ~ Journey Of The Little Mermaid
Guests walk on a moving walkway to board their clamshell vehicle. The walkway moves at the same speed as the ride cars. If needed, the walkway can be slowed or even stopped, though theyll only do this if absolutely necessary. Let a cast member know if you need this.
Once you board the vehicle, a cast member will tell you to bring down the bar in front of you. Keep in mind that it will lock wherever you put it, so try to bring it down to a comfortable level since you wont be able to raise it once its lowered.
Wheelchair/scooter info: The Little Mermaid is one of the newest rides in Magic Kingdom. It has accessible vehicles that are similar to others with fold down ramps, but theyre improved. The Imagineers took what they learned from the other vehicles and used it to design them with easier access. The wheelchair accessible clamshells load on a different angle which allows the ramp onto the ride car to be longer. This makes it less steep and easier to drive onto with a wheelchair. The accessible vehicles also have a little more space inside. Youll also find that the moving walkway here is wider than that on other similar rides.
ECV riders and wheelchair riders who wish to transfer will be asked to park nearby and walk. If you leave a mobility device at the boarding area, it will be waiting for you where you unload.
