About Lyft And Those Minnie Vans
This post is not about Minnie Vans. Minnie Vans are an Uber-like service operated by Disney in partnership with Ubers largest competitor, Lyft. Much of this guide is applicable to Lyft, as well, and Shannon at WDW Prep School makes some good points about why she prefers Lyft to Uber.
Minnie Vans are a substantially different service, though. We dont cover Minnie Vans here because they cost much more than Uber, at $25+ per trip. We do use Minnie Vans occasionally, just to keep tabs on them, and theyve just never justified their high prices.

Cons Of Using Walt Disney World Uber Or Lyft
When traveling from the airport to Walt Disney World, you will be charge a small additional fee that is added when the app sees that you are getting picked up inside the airport. We recommend utilizing the Magical Express on your way into Walt Disney World and using an Uber or Lyft when you return to the airport.
Another con of Uber/Lyft is their surge pricing. This one is pretty major. Surge pricing is enabled when the drivers are being used near capacity. If there arent enough drivers to keep up with the current demand, surge pricing takes effect and the rides become a bit more expensive . This enables the ones who needs rides the most a chance to still get around.
The app will notify you when surge pricing is active in case youd like to wait a few minutes for the traffic to calm back down. You can also set it to notify you if the surge ends. While still cheaper than the ordinary taxi, surge pricing can put a damper into a rather great service. On the bright side, with the recent flood of drivers to the Walt Disney World area, surge pricing is becoming less and less common. If it happens, you can expect it around 8-10 am, and 9-11pm, when most of the park guests are arriving and leaving from the resorts.
Uber V Rental Cars At Disney World
Considering using Uber or Lyft at Walt Disney World instead of renting a car? This post covers my recent experience of ditching the rental car and instead relying on ride sharing services for transportation to Universal, from the airport, and to the Magic Kingdom and other parks.
For those unfamiliar with Uber and Lyft, they are relatively new ride sharing services that are essentially nicer alternatives to taxis that allow users to request rides via robust mobile apps. These apps show drivers in your vicinity, anticipated pick-up time, and have a host of other features. Why they are called ride sharing is beyond me, as you pay for the rides, and the driver is doing this as their full or part time job. They have both exploded in popularity in the last couple of years and have proven to be market disrupters that have wrecked havoc for taxi companies and have been politically controversial in some areas.
This was actually a bit of a last minute idea, inspired by a commenter in my recent Tips for Renting a Car at Walt Disney World post who suggested the idea. Ive never been overly keen on renting a car at Walt Disney World, as I enjoy the escapist experience of simply relying on Disney transportation , so I immediately jumped at the idea.
Wondering whether this might be an economical or convenient alternative to renting a car or solely utilizing Disney transportation? Lets take a look!

The cons: The price is dependent on surge pricing, so it may cost more during certain times of the year or if the weather is bad. You may have a bad experience with a driver. You also may have to wait to be picked up.
Uber From Tampa To Wdw
Hi, visiting in May 2020 and flying into Tampa as it was several hundreds of £ cheaper.
Were considering ways to transport ourselves from TPA to our WDW resort . Have popped the journey in both Uber & Lyft and we are happy with the quoted cost compared to hiring a car for 1 day to drive ourselves.
What I would like to know is has anyone had any recent experience of doing this journey with Uber or lyft? Are the drivers happy to do this trip or are we going to spend a lot of time waiting for a driver prepared to do it?
We had ruled out hiring a car for 1 day to drive ourselves as all in the hire car would cost in the region of £80 so hardly any savings plus the hassle factor of spending time during our first full day dropping it off at a hire centre then getting back to resort or a park etc. But if were not going to find a driver prepared to take us very easily then perhaps well have to reconsider this.
Thanks in advance
You can get a car for much less than £80 AND drop it off at the DisneyCar Care Center.
I don’t think anyone can guess what drivers will be available at some future time. You also have not factored in any surge pricing that would be applicable if you travel during rush hour. Driving from TPA to Disneyinvolves driving smack dab through Downtown Tampa. I hate driving through Downtown Tampa almost as much as I hate driving through Downtown Orlando these days.

General Advice For Walt Disney World
If the price of a rental car is expensive at the time you plan to travel, in some cases it will be cheaper to use a shuttle, towncar, van or limo to get to and from the airport, and then use taxis or Lyft to get around while youre at Walt Disney World. By using taxis instead of a rental car you dont have to worry about parking fees, valet tips, or accident insurance. Plus, you will be dropped off at the front gate , wont have to remember where you parked, and your family will not have to climb into a hot car!
Using a taxi or Lyft is especially terrific if you have little ones and decide to stay late in a theme park to enjoy the fireworks. Instead of rushing out with the crowds after the show and waiting for three Disney buses before its your turn, you call a cab and get those tuckered-out kids back to the hotel in a fraction of the time. Keep in mind that if your kids need a car seat, most ride services dont provide them because of the complexities of handling different-sized children. There are some exceptions you can read about in the on-demand ride service section below.
Even if youre staying on property, a taxi or Lyft can drastically reduce the hassle factor of going out to dinner at Disneys resorts , since there is no direct resort-to-resort transportation.
Transportation Options From Mco To Disney World
As mentioned above, there are several transportation methods to get MCO to Disney World, including a rideshare service such as Lyft, Uber, Curb, and Via, as well as a traditional taxi.
Visitors can also rent a vehicle at the airport, or if utilizing one of the car rental properties off property, take a shuttle to their destination. And finally, guests have the option of using Disneys Magical Express replacement, Mears Connect.
Lets take a look at what to expect with each option below:

Private Car Service At Mco
This option may sound decadent and out of reach, but can actually be quite affordable. The sweet spot for these services, in my opinion, is larger families who want to reduce travel times. With Uber and Lyft, it can get pricey trying to find a larger size car that will fit everyone. On a shuttle bus service like Mears, you may make stops on the way to the hotel room. With private car service, we were able to price out options for 7-10 passengers starting at just $130ish. Ultimate Town Car offers one perk that the others dont. A free 15 minute grocery stop. You can learn more on their site. We know that packing your own snacks at WDW is a great way to save money. Being able to pickup groceries on the way to your hotel is clutch.
Drivers will meet you inside the airport at the bottom of the escalators near baggage claim. They will have a sign with your name on it .
One thing to note is that your credit card will be charged 48 hours before your trip and a 20% gratuity is added automatically. For a family of 4 this option would cost roughly $129.60 one way at the cheapest level making it significantly cheaper than Mears Connect Express. Ultimate Town Car does offer car seat options at no cost with some limits.
