Guardians of the Galaxy 3 director James Gunn commented in that they still need to film the scenes for Cosmic Rewind, and then in, James Gunn that he was currently working on Cosmic Rewind. If they are still currently working on the scenes for the ride, whether filming or editing in post-production, that would mean a quick turnaround to get this ride opened by October 1st.
While there is no official opening or delayed date yet, its probably safer to guess Cosmic Rewind will open alongside TRON sometime in 2022. Keep in mind 2022 is EPCOTs 40th Anniversary, having opened in 1982. Its possible if there is a delay, it could time up to debut the new major attraction during EPCOTs big year.

Tron Lightcycle Run Opening Date
Now lets turn to the opening date of Magic Kingdoms upcoming thrill ride. Walt Disney World has dropped the line that TRON Lightcycle Run is set to open at Magic Kingdom Park in time for Walt Disney Worlds 50th anniversary in 2021.
This is not surprising, as that was the plan prior to the multi-month closure of Walt Disney World, during which all construction stopped. Even after the parks reopened, work was slow to resume inside Magic Kingdom on TRON Lightcycle Run.
Late last year, there was a credible rumor that TRON Lightcycle Run construction would pause until at least the next fiscal year. While it did slow down considerably, work never stopped entirelyand has since gained momentum.
In our view, the best case scenario is that TRON Lightcycle Run debuts for a second push of Walt Disney Worlds 50th Anniversary. Its still too early for Walt Disney World to announce an official opening date.
Weve speculated repeatedly that Walt Disney World would deliberately stagger its new attraction debuts over the course of 2022 and 2023 as a way to incentivize new and repeat trips. Our thinking was that the debuts of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at Epcot and TRON Lightcycle Run at Magic Kingdom would be sufficiently spaced to give new bookings a shot in the arm.
Walt Disney World recently announced that Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind opens in Summer 2022. So where does that leave TRON Lightcycle Runs opening date?
Disney: Whats Going On At Epcots Guardians Of The Galaxy Ride Inside And Out
Thank you for supporting our journalism. This article is available exclusively for our subscribers, who help fund our work at the Orlando Sentinel.
One surprise at Walt Disney World last week had little to do with its 50th anniversary. The ground floor of Epcots upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind was open briefly to members of the media covering the event.
The roller coaster, set to open sometime in 2022, had just moved to the stage of its construction where hard hats were no longer required. Folks were escorted in, a dozen or so at a time, to peer up at the rails and hear spiels from two Imagineers. Photography was not allowed. Questions were not allowed.
What we saw, in three words: big and black.
There were black walls, black ceiling, black support poles, black fencing and loads of black, curved railing filling much of the available space. There was a purple set piece that looked like a comic book explosion. And this, they said, was about half the experience.
They didnt say much else, but the next day, Alex Wright, senior creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering, fielded my questions.
Such as, wow, thats a lot of black paint, right?
We will not want you to know that youre on a roller-coaster track, Wright said. There are things that we learned about camouflaging things in the dark there that were kind of employing here. So, its all to this lineage of things weve done before and kind of taking them to the next level.

Lightcycles On Display In Tomorrowland
On December 16th, 2019, Tron Lightcycle Run ride vehicles were put on display just feet away from the rides future entrance, right outside of the Tomorrowland Arcade . The purpose of these vehicles is to promote the attraction, answer guest questions about the ride, as well as give guests the opportunity to practice mounting the bikes for a photo op. It has also been speculated these vehicles were rolled out more so as a test to see how intuitive these bikes would be for American guests, seeing what needs to be emphasized or taught in the lead up to guests boarding the actual ride to optimize loading. These vehicles were removed during the closure of Walt Disney World.
Is Tron Lightcycle Run Coaster Opening In 2022
Over the last few months, Disney has given updates on many of its new projects coming to Walt Disney World, but surprisingly, TRON Lightcycle Run hasnt been one of them.
Construction on the TRON coaster has been going on for about 4 years already, yet we still dont have an opening date for the ride. In fact, we havent gotten many new details about the ride since it was originally announced.
Originally, it was thought that the project could be finished in late 2021, and in time for the start of Disney Worlds 50th Anniversary celebration in October.
However, now it looks like the TRON Lightcycle Run coaster might not even open in 2022, with a potential 2023 opening date possible.
After the long closure of The Walt Disney World theme parks and the shutdown of construction across the property, all the current projects were delayed compared with their original estimated opening dates, and some were outright canceled.
Recent developments, lead by the lack of comments from Disney hint that TRON Lightcycle Run will be delayed even further than originally hoped.
Once the parks reopened, construction picked up attractions like Remys Ratatouille Adventure, which has since debuted. Weve seen multiple updates for another highly anticipated roller coaster coming to Disney World, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and we even have an opening date of Summer 2022.

Tron Coaster At Mk Possible Opening Spring 2021
The permits have now been filed for the construction of the new Tron coaster at MK. Estimated possible opening date is Spring 2021 in time for the 50th anniversary that October.
The WDW railroad and the Tomorrowland Speedway will close temporarily for a time beginning in 2019 for the consturction of the new coaster building.
I wonder if this one will usher in the use of Tiers for FP+ at MK once it opens.
Seems like tiers come along for the WDW parks when they receive one of more “really big E-ticket’ ride.
Do we know when the WDWRR will close? Going in March and won’t be the same without the trains
Is it going to be a or a Ride??
The train is shutting down in December, no re-opening date has been specified yet. I would be surprised if it re-opened before 2020.
That’s a shame, a bit gutted now!

Is This The Same Ride As In Shanghai Disneyland
The TRON coaster is a copy of the version already in Shanghai Disneyland which opened in 2016. It quickly became one of the most popular rides in the park according to guests and a park icon.
The track layout for the Tron coaster, the ride vehicles, and the canopy structure will all be the same in the Magic Kingdom when built as they are in Shanghai Disneyland.
While we cant say right now that every, single piece of steel will be 100% the same, it sure looks like that will pretty much be the case.
The only slight difference we know about so far is the attraction name. In the Shanghai version, its called: Tron Lightcycle Power Run whereas in Disney World its called: Tron Lightcycle Run, dropping the word power from the title.

Although Disney has been fairly silent regarding their plans for TRONs opening, in January 2021, USA Today claimedthat TRON is unlikely to open on time. Disney officially confirmed several projects to open in 2021 and TRON Lightcycle Run was NOT included in their announcements.
TRON Lightcycle Sign
Disney has not yet confirmed whether TRON will be opening in 2021 or delayed until 2022. It doesnt mean it WONT open, it just means that they havent officially released that date yet. But again, as we mentioned, the clock is ticking to hit that goal of the 50th Anniversary.

In we saw a walking Baby Groot robot preview, which may or may not be a part of Cosmic Rewind. TechCrunchnoted that this version of Groot could eventually appear in the parks as is or could take an entirely different form.
Whether a Baby Groot animatronic will be part of Cosmic Rewind is currently unknown, so this may not be a factor in Cosmic Rewinds opening date.
Exciting Progress Is Being Made On The Tron Attraction Coming To Magic Kingdom Park
by Thomas Smith, Editorial Content Director, Disney Parks
Recently, we celebrated another major construction milestone for the much-anticipated TRON attraction coming to Magic Kingdom Park at the Walt Disney World Resort the first steel support columns have been installed!
The steel columns will serve as the framework thatll support the coasters track in Tomorrowland. And today, we have a special look at the columns and the progress Walt Disney Imagineers, Disney cast members and project teams have made in bringing the attraction to life.
The TRON attraction is based on the guest-favorite attraction TRON Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland. This coaster-style attraction will allow riders to board a train of two-wheeled Lightcycles for a thrilling race through the digital frontier.
Earlier this year, cast members continued a Disney tradition by signing their names on one of the first steel support columns for the new attraction. Check out our original TRON story for more images.

Construction Update: Tron Coaster At The Magic Kingdom
by Melissa Roden·August 22, 2020
During our visit to Magic Kingdom today we notice that construction for the new TRON Lightcycle Run is still going strong and we couldnt help but give you a first look!
We managed to nab some awesome images of the canopies for the ride starting to take shape!
You can now get clear images of the coaster moving through the building out to where the canopies will be.
We are absolutely amazed at the progress being made to building housing the attraction!
Heres an awesome look at the canopies being constructed.
As well as a few images of the track winding its way through a corner of Tomorrowland.
The construction, as you can see from the tracks below is one of the reasons why the Walt Disney World Railroad is currently shut down.
We never cease to be impressed at the sheer size and scale of this attraction.
We cant remember the last time we were so dazzled by a project Disney was working on!
Just a look at the construction site alone lets us know that the TRON coaster is going to be pretty EPIC!

A similar attraction has already become a fan favorite at Shanghai Disneyland where it opened in 2016.
As of yet, Disney has not announced new regarding delays due to the COVID-19 closures.

How Will The Tron Roller Coaster Impact Magic Kingdom Touring
This is the question that most interests me. The default assumption should be that this will be the most popular ride at Magic Kingdom when it debuts, and that it will be a paid individual Lightning Lane and the go-to for rope drop at Magic Kingdom.
Recent history has been spotty on virtual queues. Rise of the Resistance used a virtual queue. Then Mickey & Minnies Runaway Railway didnt use a virtual queue. Remys Ratatouille Adventure used a virtual queue. If I had to guess, Id guess that TRON will use a virtual queue.
In any case, TRON will draw even more crowds to this side of the park, which currently houses Space Mountain and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Rope drop strategy at Magic Kingdom will continue to be the samedo what you need to on this side and then hightail it out west while waits over there are low.

What If I Definitely Want To Book My Trip When Its Open
Wait to book. Heres what I previously wrote :
Lookstuff happens. Its always possible that something derails the plan and the coaster doesnt even open in 2021. But the safest you can reasonably be to plan a trip to ride it would be to book a trip in 2022, which will be after 2021.
I was right. Stuff happened. Now, theres really no way to guarantee youll visit once its open. At this point, Id be looking at early 2023 to be safe, but probably holding off on booking until more information is announced.

How Fast Is Tron Roller Coaster
To quote Top Gun: I feel the need, the need for speed. If high speeds are what you want, then this is going to be the ride for you. Just how fast is the Tron roller coaster ride?
The Shanghai version of Tron Lightcycle Power Run reaches speeds of just under 60 mph , making it the fastest Disney roller coaster in the world. Since the Magic Kingdom version of TRON is an exact copy, we can expect the same top speed.
If so, it will instantly make the TRON coaster, the fastest roller coaster in Walt Disney World, faster than both Rock n Roller Coaster and Expedition Everest.
What Is Tron Lightcycle Power Run
Get excited people, because the Tron roller coaster, Tron Lightcycle Run, Tron ride, or whatever you want to call it, is coming to Walt Disney World! What exactly is it, and why does it have such a long name??
The proper name for the attraction is Tron Lightcycle Run. Its a futuristic roller coaster based on the TRON franchise and has guests climb aboard the iconic two-wheeled Lightcycles as they race and speed through this mind-bending roller coaster track in The Grid.
Thats right, generic future themes are played out. The digital frontier is where you are going on Tron.
It is an indoor-outdoor coaster, which is covered by a huge hanging canopy marked by its changing colors. It will be a dominant fixture on the Magic Kingdom skyline when opened and will attract guests from all around the park.

Numerous capital projects were put on hold during the coronavirus pandemic, but several have resumed construction. Among the most anticipated projects:
* Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, a new roller coaster coming to Epcot next year. Disney describes the ride as a storycoaster, with cars that rotate 360 degrees so riders are always focused on the action as they help the Guardians save the galaxy. The ride will have the first reverse launch on a Disney coaster and will be one of the longest enclosed coasters in the world. Disney has not set a firm date on its debut, other than 2022.
