Things To Do Near Walt Disney World

Do An Animation Class At The Art Of Animation Resort

Top 5 Favorite Things to Do at Walt Disney World

Animation is a huge part of Disney culture, and you can have your own experience without paying a dime.

Head over to Disneys Art of Animation Resort where they hold regular animation classes in the lobby for you to draw a famous Disney character.

These classes began at Disneys Hollywood Studios, but have now been taken out and moved to Animal Kingdom.

Art of Animation is the only place you can do them outside of the parks, however, and it is well worth a visit if you havent done one before.

You also get to take your drawing home with you, so its a free thing to do in Disney World and a free Disney souvenir!

Near Walt Disney World

Universal Orlando ResortWeve been visiting Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure with regularity for the past few years, and really enjoy both of these parks. Although weve yet to do it, Volcano Bay water park also looks pretty cool now that its gotten past its first-year hiccups. For first timers to Orlando, wed go as far as recommending either parks over a day at Disneys Hollywood Studios until Star Wars: Galaxys Edge construction is finished.

For more tips on visiting, read our Universal Orlando Trip Planning Guide. Other popular parks, including SeaWorld, Busch Gardens Tampa, and Legoland Florida dont make the list because they dont hold much interest for us, personally. Also, it doesnt make sense to have a list of things outside the parks include a ton of other theme parks.

Discovery Cove With a more intimate experience than SeaWorld, Animal Kingdom, or just about anywhere else, for that matter, Discovery Cove is intriguing. Much of that intrigue is killed for us by the price , but this remains a someday item for us.

Bioluminescent Kayak Tours Tired of waiting in line for Pandoras Navi River Journey? Theres already a bioluminescent boat ride in Central Florida. These nighttime kayak tours through Indian River Lagoon sound really fascinating to us.

Eat A Bacon/banana/peanut Butter/nutella Sandwich

Oh, yeah, we love our food hacks. And when we got a chance to take a Peanut Butter, Chocolate-Hazelnut Spread, and Banana Sandwich from Tortuga Tavern at Magic Kingdom and give it a Bacon upgrade, we went for it! So we headed on over to Westward Ho in Frontierland and added a Candied Bacon Skewer to it.

Peanut butter and bacon Yes, please.

Oh yeah, we did! The sandwich is $9.99 and the bacon is also $9.99. So theres an ultimate food hack for you to try for $20. And if you want even MORE Disney World food hacks, !

Best Magic Kingdom Attractions And Restaurants

Magic Kingdom is Walt Disney Worlds most popular park, and also its smallest. This makes having a plan an important part of your Magic Kingdom Day if you hope to avoid the crowds and enjoy the rides. While there is so much to do in this park, know that some things can be skipped if youre pressed for time, or trying to prioritize attractions. Heres a list of things you should include in your day at Magic Kingdom Park.

Spend The Day At Disney Springs

25 Ultimate Things to Do at Walt Disney World Fodors Travel Guide

Disney Springs is one of the best free things to do at Disney World because it doesnt require you to spend any money in order to enjoy the awesome atmosphere, live music at many times of the year, and family-friendly vibe.

Of course, you can spend money here as its the main shopping and dining hub of Disney World, but it doesnt cost anything to wander around and do some intense window shopping.

Stop by the LEGO store to play with LEGOs and build racer cars for free, or walk across the lake for some gorgeous views.

The Rainforest Cafe volcano erupts at regular intervals, and you can see a grand display of fire!

At seasonal times of the year, Disney Springs is also filled with more free things to do, like the Christmas Tree Trail over the holidays.

It costs nothing to enter this wonderland of decorated trees and Disney decorations.

Changes At Disney World

Much has changed since our last visit to Disney World, although things are gradually returning to normal and all the top rides are open. Check the Disney website for the latest details.

The main restrictions currently are:

  • You must make a reservation to visit a park using the Disney Park Pass Reservation System on their website.
  • Masks are required indoors, on attractions, and on transportation, regardless of vaccination status.
  • FastPasses have been replaced with a new system .
  • Extra Magic Hours have been replaced with Early Theme Park Entry, which gives Disney Resort guests a 30-minute early entry to each park every day.
  • Parades and some attractions are currently suspended.
  • Some restaurants are temporarily closed.
  • Fireworks resumed on July 1 at Magic Kingdom Park and EPCOT.

Listen To A Complimentary Concert

Fans of live music will have no complaints when visiting Walt Disney World. Outside the theme parks, musical performers can be found regularly throughout the park, especially at Disney Springs, Disneys BoardWalk, and at several lounges in moderate and deluxe Disney resorts. Disney Springs comes to life at night with the sound of an array of musical acts. In the past, you could have listened to the tunes of yesterday played by the Grand Floridian Orchestra Society at Disneys Grand Floridian Resort, however they unfortunately played their last Disney concert back in 2020 as a result of the pandemic and are not set to return.

That being said, we anticipate that youll still be able to tap your toes to some live jazz at Scat Cats Club at Disneys Port Orleans French Quarter, and hopefully at other Disney resort lounges, in the future. Additionally, though a cover charge is often required on busy nights, you can often get in to Jellyrolls on Disneys BoardWalk without a fee on slower evenings.

The 10 Best Things To Do At Disney World

Walt Disney World

Disney World is a massive vacation resort with many hotels, an astonishing number of restaurants, shopping and entertainment districts, and a wealth of other features to explore.

Want more than these 10? Consider the enchanting Animal Kingdom show, “Finding Nemo: The Musical,” a ride aboard Kilimanjaro Safaris, and a refreshing serving of Dole Whip, the pineapple-flavored treat that is served at Aloha Isle in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom and Capt. Cook’s at Disney’s Polynesian Resort.

Watch Now: Must-Dos at Disney World

Many Disney World visitors chow down on the same nondescript fast food typically found at traditional amusement parks. And that’s a shame.

They are missing out on some fantastic restaurants in the Florida resort and an opportunity to make their vacations more memorable. Disney World’s best table-service restaurants include both high-end and more moderately priced restaurants such as Jiko, The Cooking Place at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, and the Flying Fish at Disney’s BoardWalk.

Don’t blow all your vacation dollars indulging in table-service restaurants, but that doesn’t mean you have to settle for burgers and fries all the time either. The resort has some great counter-service restaurants, including Sunshine Seasons at Epcot and Flame Tree Barbecue at Disneys Animal Kingdom. If you are looking for something sweet, Disney World has delectable snacks and desserts.

Magic Kingdom For Adults

Magic Kingdom is the park most people think of when they think of Walt Disney Wold. This park mainly focuses on kids and family time, but that doesnt mean adults traveling solo cant get in on the fun too!

1 Get a Haircut

Right on Main Street U.S.A. theres a small barber shop where you can get your haircut. If this is of interest, then youre going to want to get a reservation right when you walk into the park. Mainly due to the fact that the time slots for each day go quickly.

While getting your haircut you might see kids getting their first haircut, but dont let that discourage you from popping in. The Cast Members who work at the Harmony Barber Shop are ready to welcome anyone into their seats.

2 Dine in the Secret Room at Skipper Canteen

If you plan on dining somewhere at Magic Kingdom, we highly suggest Skipper Canteen located in the Adventureland part of the park. The restaurant is based on the Jungle Cruise attraction that is also located in Adventureland.

One unique part of this restaurant is that you can dine in a secret room. This room is hidden behind massive bookshelves, and ties together the story of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers.

Nods to the fictional group can also be found at Hong Kong Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea, Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, Disney Cruise Line and other locations at Walt Disney World.

Dip In The Hotel Pool

This is one you need to actually be staying on property for, but if you are dont forget about the fabulous pool at your hotel! Every single hotel at Walt Disney World has a pool and a day or afternoon spent by it can be just the relaxing re-energizing activity you need to gear up for a full day of park hopping another time.

Disneys Contemporary Resort and Grand Floridian even have cabanas to rent.

Shrink To The Size Of A Toy

Toy Story Land at Hollywood Studios is fun for kids and adults alike. The themed area is designed to look like Andys backyard with perspective and sightlines designed to make you feel like youre the size of a small toy. Attractions, food stands, and even the restrooms have a larger-than-life feeling with references to all kinds of toys, from Scrabble pieces to a giant, interactive Etch-A-Sketch. Slinky Dog Dash is a fun but not too thrilling ride perfect for a kids first roller coaster.

Tour The Disney Resort Christmas Decorations

25 Ultimate Things to Do at Walt Disney World Fodors Travel Guide

Another one of my personal favorite resort freebies is to go resort hopping in search for all the Disney Christmas Decorations.

This can be done during the holiday season from November until early January. Its a fun activity thats even better with a free sightseeing ride on the monorail around the Magic Kingdom resorts.

The Peoplemover Is One Of My Favorite Classic Attractions

The Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover is one of those classic rides that never gets old.

It’s in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom, and the ride provides a full tour of the section of the park, including most of the attractions.

It’s a very relaxing ride, and it’s the perfect way to catch a nice breeze on a warm day.

Catch A Free Movie Under The Stars

Theres no question that we love Disney theme parks. Our whole blog is dedicated to them, after all! Another thing we love just as much is Disney movies. So, what could be more perfect than watching a Disney movie under the moonlight while on a vacation at Disney World? These complimentary, al fresco film screenings can be found at almost every Disney resort often with a toasty campfire burning nearby and feature such favorites as Beauty & the Beast, Moana, Frozen, and more. Movie schedules rotate from resort to resort, so ask at the front desk for the most up-to-date slate of films showing.

Visitors can enjoy hiking as well as many plant and animal species. While admission is free, donations are appreciated.

Mini Trip Report From A Reader reader Steve K has this to say about what he learned from this page:

I was sufficiently inspired byFREE and Cheap Stuff to Do at Walt Disney World that I built that idea into my recent trip. Although my flight home was on Saturday morning, the last night of my Disney resort stay was Thursday. On Friday, rather than tour any theme parks, I enjoyed a transportation odyssey to all the Disney resorts I had yet to visit. Along the way, there was a lot of finely themed landscaping and architecture, as well as some special Disney treats like Tonga Toast, Zebra Domes, and the beignets at Port Orleans French Quarter. The odyssey ended at Downtown Disney . This was a great way to have a lot of Disney fun and save a chunk of money in the process. Im very glad you posted that page on your site!

Dine Inside Cinderella Castle

Disney dining reservations are notoriously hard to snag as sit-down bookings open up 60 days before a trip. One of the hardest, most-coveted reservations is Cinderellas Royal Table. Its not really about the food but rather the ambiance as the dining hall is literally inside Cinderella Castle. You get to take a special gold elevator and look out over Fantasyland and the rest of Magic Kingdom. Alternatively, if you cant get in at Cindys, Be Our Guest is just as magical for Beauty and the Beast fans. The restaurant inspired by Beasts castle features the ballroom, a mysterious West Wing, and, yes, you can try the gray stuff.

Worlds Largest Entertainment Mcdonalds And Playplace

25 Ultimate Things to Do at Walt Disney World Fodors Travel Guide

Why would we put a McDonalds on this list? Well, have you ever been to a McDonalds shaped like a giant bag of fries? With 19,000 square feet, the worlds largest Entertainment McDonalds and Playplace is in Orlando, and it can accommodate tons of visitors each day thanks to their touchscreen ordering system.

In addition to the traditional menu that features Chicken McNuggets and Big Macs, this location also has build-your-own pizza and pasta plus there is a dessert bar.

Along with the Playplace, this McDonalds also has dozens of arcade games for the kids to enjoy, and a Chuck E. Cheese-style prize wall.
