Space Mountain Ride Disney World

Expedition Everest Legend Of The Forbidden Mountain

Space Mountain POV Walt Disney World (Warning: TW Flashing Lights)

Without spoiling too much, Expedition Everest is indisputably one of Disneys best rides. The Forbidden Mountain imposes on you long before you even make your way to the ride, setting you up for one of the scariest and most surprising rides in Walt Disney World.

The queue is arguably the best on property, too, setting up the story of both the expedition and the Forbidden Mountain .

And the ride experience is something else. With powerful turns, stunning resort-wide views, thrilling drops, and shocking surprises along the way,

Yesthe ride isnt technically fully functional. The Yeti does not have the range of motion that added to the terror in the early days of the ride due to a complex structural problem . That said, even the current version of the ride is an easy pick for the best roller coaster in Walt Disney World.

Disney Loves Strategic Heights

Disney is known for making buildings very specific heights. For example, Cinderellas Castle is exactly one foot below the height where a red light would be required to be on top. They also do this to force the eye to focus on certain things and used forced perspective to make buildings appear taller.

When it comes to the tallest building in the Magic Kingdom park, the Space Mountain ride comes in number two. Imagineers and park designers wanted Cinderellas Castle to be the tallest focal point when seeing Magic Kingdom from afar.

Space Mountain comes in at 183 feet tall at the top of the tallest spire, while the castle is 5 feet taller at its tallest point.

The Ride Almost Didnt Happen

When Walt Disney saw the success of the Matterhorn at Disneyland, he realized that Guests loved thrill rides and they could thrive in the Parks. He then decided to give the Matterhorn a space-themed twist and put the new ride in his new Florida theme park that he was building. Unfortunately, Walt died in 1966 and the idea for Space Mountain was shelved.

However, after Magic Kingdom opened in Florida, Imagineers noticed that the Park was incredibly popular amongst teens and young adults, and if they wanted to keep them coming, they needed to put in some more thrill rides. They then went back and took out the plans for Space Mountain.

How Fast Does Space Mountain Go

I was surprised to recently discover that Space Mountain, at only 28 miles per hour, is slower than both Big Thunder Mountain RailroadandSeven Dwarfs Mine Train. This actually stuck me as kind of funny, because when I was a kid, Space Mountain was considered the big-bad-scary-attraction .

Im guessing that if you rode Space Mountain with the lights on, it would seem like a much more mild experience . Like a lot of things in Disney World, the effects create a sensation thats different from the actual reality.

Your ride car will make a turn and then take you up a 180-foot climb. Suddenly youre vehicle is released and the ride begins. We consistently hear that the roughness of the tracks is uncomfortable, even for people without health issues.

The ride itself is very dark, and youll rush by a lot of flashing lights and still lights. Weve heard that this can be an issue for some people with seizure disorders who are sensitive to lights. One particularly intense portion of the ride is when the ride car first takes off. Youll pass through a closed tunnel with many long lights that are meant to simulate a ship taking off in space through the stars at high speed. Theres a kind of pulsating light effect that increases in speed as you move forward. Towards the end theres another tunnel simulating re-entry into Earths atmosphere, which is shorter with a lot of flashing red lights. A bright light flashes when your photo is taken.

Adding to the visual confusion are projected asteroids, space vehicles and other visual effects moving across the dome. This is almost subliminal, but can definitely add to disorientation for some people.

Tip: Some people feel theyre able to discern direction more when seated in the front seat.

People prone to motion sickness may want to avoid eating right before this ride. There are high-pitched noises in this attraction. This ride may be too intense and scary for some young children, and for those who are sensitive.

Disneylands Matterhorn Bobsleds was the person behind the idea of this intergalactic ride. Walt Disney believed in his concept owing to his success.

Matterhorn originally thought of Space Mountain as the renovated central attraction of Disneyland, which included Space Port. This area, later on, came to be known as Space Voyage.

This idea remained merely that for a long time. Imagineers at Disney realized after Walt Disneys death that there was a serious lack of thrill rides, and they needed to do something about it. Therefore, Space Mountain was set for construction after more technology and land became available. The Imagineers decided to build it on the perimeter berm of the park.

A marching band performed to celebrate Space Mountain Disney World Lights On opening. James Irwin, the pilot of the Lunar Module, attended as a guest of honor on this occasion.

Today Space Mountain is enjoyed by children and adults alike and has gone down as one of the most popular thrill rides in history.

What Is Hidden In The Dark

Space Mountain takes place entirely in the dark and was the first fully enclosed roller coaster. But, the dark is more than just a thematic element.

The dark in the ride hides the space travelers from seeing how many trains are on the track, as well as the support beams, which are everywhere. Dont believe me? Check out this POV video of Space Mountain with the lights on.

Another benefit of the dark is to make the ride more thrilling. Space Mountain only has a top speed of 28 miles per hour, which is very low for a thrill ride. While navigating twists and turns in the dark, the speed feels faster.

Lastly, the dark hides the view of the People Mover from the space Travelers on the Space Mountain ride.

The Space Mountain Ride Mirror

The Space Mountain ride in Disney World has two identical, but mirrored tracks. When the queue splits into two lines, each line leads to a different track. The line to the left heads to Track A which is about 10 feet longer to bring the rockets to the same area for the lift hill.

Originally the tracks were planned to each be different, with one side having more drops and dips, and one side having more sharp turns, but that concept never came to fruition, as it was cheaper to build two identical tracks. The tracks under this concept were originally called alpha and omega.
