Pirates of the Caribbean is a dark ride at Disneyland, Walt Disney World‘s Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Park at Disneyland Paris, and Shanghai Disneyland.

The ride tells the story of a band of pirates in the West Indies islands around the Caribbean Sea in the 17th and 18th centuries with the saga of their voyages, troubles, and exploits. The original version of the ride was opened at the original Disneyland, in Anaheim, California, near Los Angeles, in 1967, and was the last ride whose construction was envisioned and personally overseen by Walt Disney, who died three months before it opened. After immense popularity, the ride was replicated seven years later at the Magic Kingdom of Walt Disney World, near Orlando, Florida, soon after it opened, in 1973. Versions followed at Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, and at Disneyland Paris in 1992. Each of the initial four versions of the ride has a different façade but a similar ride experience. A reimagined version of the ride influenced by the visitors’ familiarity with the worldwide success of the feature film series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure, opened at the Shanghai Disneyland Park in 2016.

Handicapped Information For Pirates Of The Caribbean

Wheelchair/ECV Queue Information:

Both the Genie+ and regular lines are wheelchair accessible. The Genie+ entrance is on the right as you enter the line.

Guests using ECVs and personal wheelchairs will be asked whether they want to walk in line or transfer to an attraction wheelchair. The reason for this is that the boarding area is in one building and the unload area is in an entirely different building, one floor below ground level.

There are always attraction wheelchairs available at the unload area, but it can sometimes become difficult to make sure someones own wheelchair gets to the unload area at the right time. If you need your own wheelchair in the line for some reason, explain that to the Cast Member at the entrance. They MAY be able to accommodate you although this may require coming back at a different time when staff are available to move the chair. Contributor Sue Mickelson requests this for her daughter since her wheelchair has special equipment that she needs to sit comfortably.

If you brought your own wheelchair to the boarding area, it will be waiting for you at the unload area. If you transferred to an attraction wheelchair, there will be an attraction wheelchair parked at the unload area. You can take one of those into the elevator to the area where you parked your own wheelchair or ECV when you entered the line. It will be in the same area that you left it, near the ride entrance.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is a swinging family coaster themed after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I consider Seven Dwarfs Mine Train a cross between a coaster and a dark ride since a significant part of the attraction consists of a slow-moving journey through the mine where a million diamonds are mined by audio-animatronic dwarfs.

Drop Rating: 1.5

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is an incredibly smooth and fluid coaster designed for families. Yes, it has a few turns and hills with the largest drop being 39 feet tall. However, theyre not nearly as rough or sudden as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and even the swing of the vehicles is barely noticeable. Its honestly one of the best coasters for little ones and ride chickens alike.

Height Warning: 1

Seven Dwarfs Mine Trains track is largely built into the hill and scenery. Rarely do you feel elevated or even far off of the ground.

Speed Rating: 1.5

Just like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Seven Dwarfs Mine Trains max speed is 34 mph. While I did rate Big Thunders speed at 2, Im only rating the Seven Dwarfs Mine Trains speed a 1.5. My reasoning is that Seven Dwarfs Mine Train slows down and moves a dark ride pace for part of the ride experience. Also, it doesnt feel as fast as Big Thunder since it isnt as wild and rough.

Autism and Disney World: Pirates Of The Caribbean Ride

See Captain Jacks signature? Photo by Brett Svenson

With the addition of Captain Jack and Barbossa to the ride, Disney Imagineers wanted to find a way to start the refurbished experience off the right way. When you first set sail, you will move through a wall of mist into the fantastical world of the pirates.

Audio and a projection of Davy Jones, first introduced in Dead Mans Chest, now greeted riders! And if you think Curse of the Black Pearl had all but captured the rideyou may want to check out the deleted scenes in Dead Mans Chest.

You will be treated to a very familiar scene which may leave you feeling a little unwell! In addition to these moments, throughout the ride you will also hear the voices of Paul Frees and Thurl Ravenscroftwho also provided voices for the Haunted Mansion. The magic works both ways.

Cast Members Weigh In

While George isnt officially recognized by Disney, and perhaps may just be an urban legend, throughout the years cast members have come forward with their own tales of strange things happening at the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.

Some dont believe it at all. Others claim that while cast members dont say Good morning, they do indeed say Good night.

Others, stranger still, deny the existence of George, but do believe theres something going on inside Pirates of the Caribbean. As one poster shared at DISboards in 2013:

Though most Disney ghost stories have been debunked, I do believe there is something in that building other than rats, mold, and smelly pirates. There are sections of the ride where no one would go, not even managers. We all felt this over whelming sense of dread and sorrow. Eventually, we werent allowed to go to those places anymore for safety reasons.

Ride Details For Pirates Of The Caribbean

Although the majority of this ride is gentle, theres a point at which the boat makes a sudden acceleration, goes down a fairly short flume and then makes a sudden short, somewhat steep drop. Some find the drop to be insignificant, even with pain issues. Those who are sensitive find it uncomfortable as with this Disney guest:

Ill never go on this ride again. Its not that I wouldnt like to. I would. Its fun for the most part. But we were riding along when all of a sudden the boat went down a little waterfall thing and slapped down hard on the water. Ive got a neck problem and it really hurt. I had no idea this was coming, or I wouldnt have gone on this ride.

For people with pain issues, sensitive backs or necks, or other similar issues, it can cause discomfort. It also happens in the dark, so it may come as a surprise.

Heres a warning sign outside of the attraction:

When the boat hits the bottom, the people in the first few rows or so may get splashed. However, its more of a minor splash than a soaking.

There are times when the boats get backed up, and occasionally one boat will hit the boat in front of it. The collision occurs at a slow rate of speed, and most people will find it nothing to write home about. However, the very sensitive may find it uncomfortable.

Synthetic fragrances are used. For example, a burning wood scent can be detected in the burning town scene. This is a synthetic fragrance.

The Fire Was A Little Too Realistic

Pirates of the Caribbean Ride POV at Magic Kingdom Walt Disney World

It took a lot of Imagineers to breathe life into the Pirates. Once they completed the storyboards, the Disney team built miniature sets. Walt himself then cast and staged the animatronic performers by hiring 120 actors to serve as models. The Imagineers filmed the models acting out their scenes to use as a reference. They also took plaster casts of the models to design the animatronic characters.

Blaine Gibson, an artist and sculptor with a background in animation, was in charge of developing the characters. He had a total understanding about animatronics, Sklar says. realized he only had a couple of seconds to communicate what a character is about. He made them slightly exaggerated. Its that subtle presentation that makes the attraction work. The lead designer for the attraction was Marc Davis, one of Walt Disneys legendary Nine Old Men.

Sklar notes that he had a hand, albeit a small one, in designing Pirates. He worked with another noted Disney Imagineer, X. Atencio, in recording the narration. Atencio wrote the script, including the now-famous Yo Ho Pirates of the Caribbean song lyrics.

Special effects master Yale Gracey created the attractions fire scene. Sklar says that it was so realistic, the city of Anaheim didnt want to approve it at first. They were afraid people would panic, he says with a laugh. We had to convince them it wasn’t real.

George The Ghosts Backstory

There are a few variations on the George mythos, but the basics are as follows. George was a construction worker hired to help build the brand new Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at the upcoming Magic Kingdom park.

During construction, George either fell off of or was crushed by a large piece of set killing him instantly. Some variations of the myth say that the tall windowed tower that can be seen during the well dunking / burning city scene is the piece of set that killed George. Some Cast Members now reportedly refer to this as Georges Tower and it allegedly contains his initials carved into the base. Supposedly, all attempts to remove the initials are fruitless and theyll always reappear, even if painted over.

Shortly after the theme park opened, a sad looking older woman would periodically visit the attraction and ask to ride alone. Cast members then reported seeing her speak to nobody and sobbing into her ride boat. As youd expect, she was revealed to be Georges heartbroken mother.

Now George haunts the Walt Disney World attraction and will make life difficult for cast members and guests, lest they show him the proper respect.

Disneyland Guests Stuck On Pirates Of The Caribbean Ride For 90 Minutes

Most guests at Disneyland and Walt Disney World get to live the pirate’s life for a few minutes at a time when they visit the iconic attraction Pirates of the Caribbean. Last weekend, however, a few aspiring swashbucklers spend a lot more time on the water than they intended. On Halloween night, the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Disneyland broke down, and at least one of the boats on the ride was stuck in a difficult spot, leaving guests sitting in the attraction for an hour-and-a-half.

According to Brian Rokos, a Disneyland Annual Passholder from Riverside, California, Pirates of the Caribbean broke down on Halloween night, October 31st, just after 6pm PT. He posted a picture to Twitter after about 10 minutes of being stuck on the ride, showing where the boat had been halted.

Rokos later spoke with Fox News to say that it started out like any other ride issue, thinking that it would be fixed or that they would be escorted off after a few minutes. However, the specific position where the boat was stuck made it difficult. There were three feet of water on either side of the boat, so the guests couldn’t just step off and walk out. They had to wait for Cast Members to come and help out. The lights came on and animatronics were turned off after about 30 minutes.

    Does Disneyland Have A Jail

    Walt Disney World

While Disney keeps its so-called jail under wraps, most have described the jail to look more like a security office or holding area. Guests cannot be arrested by Disney security. However, depending on the circumstance, the Disney jail can be used as a place to hold a disruptive Guest until police arrive.

Disney World Vs Disneyland: Pirates Of The Caribbean

    May 10, 2016 by Becky

When I visited Disneyland for the first time, one of my questions was how the parks and rides were different from each other. I wrote up a blog post about the general differences between the two parks, but now I want to take a closer look at the attractions that are on both coasts. I started this Disney World vs. Disneyland series, and today Ill be taking on Pirates of the Caribbean.

    Disneyland And Tokyo Disneyland

The entrance to the Disneyland version.

The ride begins amid glimmering fireflies during an evening abuzz with the croaking of a bullfrog in a quaint Louisiana bayou. Daring adventurers board their boats at Lafitte‘s Landing and are at once afloat in the heart of bayou country. On one side is an actual working restaurant, Blue Bayou, made to look like the backyard dinner party of a southern plantation. It takes three days to empty and refill the “bayou” for renovations. There are 630,000 gallons of water on the attraction.

Once past several rickety houseboats, the soft strumming of banjo melodies can be heard over the peaceful symphony of nature as guests pass by one houseboat, on the porch of which an old man calmly rocks back and forth in his rocking chair. But then a talking skull and crossbones, voiced by Xavier Atencio, above an archway provides this taunting warning:

Psst! Avast there! It be too late to alter course, mateys. And there be plundering pirates lurking in every cove, waiting to board. Sit closer together and keep your ruddy hands in board. That be the best way to repel boarders. And mark well me words, mateys: Dead men tell no tales! Ye come seeking adventure with salty old pirates, eh? Sure you’ve come to the proper place. But keep a weather eye open mates, and hold on tight. With both hands, if you please. Thar be squalls ahead, and Davy Jones waiting for them what don’t obey.

History Of Disneys Pirates Of The Caribbean Ride

Going Below Deck with Disney Imagineering Legend Marty Sklar

    • Email

Today, its hard to imagine Disneyland without Pirates of the Caribbean. Its such a signature and timeless attraction that it seems like it must have always been there. In fact, the pirates didnt hoist their sails until 11 years after the original Disney theme park opened. And they almost never set sail at allat least not in the form that we now know and love, as youll discover in this brief history of Pirates of the Caribbean.

According to Marty Sklar, former vice chairman and principal creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, Walt had developed a walk-through pirates concept, and workers had already put in the steel for the modest attraction when the New York Worlds Fair made him rethink his plans. The 1964-65 fair featured four Disney projects, including it’s a small world. The iconic attractions runaway success and ability to move enormous numbers of guests through the experience motivated Walt to incorporate a similar ride system for Pirates. Besides, the boats worked well with the theme, and they allowed the story to unfold in a more controlled and linear fashion.
