Its A Small World Holiday Overlay

One of the amazing holiday overlays at Disneyland Park during the holiday season, in addition to my personal favorite, Haunted Mansion Holiday, is its a Small World. The nighttime façade is transformed to look like a winter wonderland in more ways than one!

Not only is there a special performance nightly of lighting the façade of the attraction, but the inside of the attraction is quite a joyous surprise as guests are invited to take a cruise around the world for the holidays.

The inside décor matches the holiday spirit as seen on the outside. The décor and special holiday rendition of the famous Sherman brothers is also quite the treat.

Going For A Ride On Its A Small World

The attraction is among the most innocuous, mild attractions at any Disney parkor any other park for that matter. In fact, it has no age or height requirements and does not include any safety restraints. The gentle boat ride moves quite slowly from scene to scene. Although Its a Small World is known as a dark ride , it is anything but dark in tone. Its sunny, upbeat tableaus of chirpy children from around the globe singing together is presented on bright, pop art-inspired sets. It is quite appropriate for virtually anybody, regardless of age or thrill tolerance, to set sail on the attraction.

    New York World’s Fair

    it

The first incarnation of It’s a Small World, which debuted at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, was an afterthought and nearly did not happen. Ford and General Electric had engaged Disney early on to create their pavilions for the 1964 New York World’s Fair. WED Enterprises had already long been at work developing a “dancing-doll” designed to reproduce human movement resulting in a crude early audio-animatronics fashioned as Abraham Lincoln when the State of Illinois approached Disney to create the Illinois Pavilion, representatives of the state instantly approved after being “introduced” to the robotic figurehead. A nine wide-screen CircleVision 360° exhibit for Kodak‘s pavilion was also being planned as an improvement over the existing Disneyland eleven 4:3 format screen Circarama when Pepsi approached Disney with a plan to tribute UNICEF.

Disney seemed to be the showman to give us the package we want … He’s terrific. He’s got his hands in more bowls than anyone I’ve ever seen, but he accomplishes what he sets out to do. J.G. Mullaly, Ford’s World’s Fair program manager.

Disneys Its A Small World Ride: An Incursion Into The Racial Implications Of The African Display By Audrey Boutot

The famously idealized Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is an attraction park large enough to be considered a city. Founded on tourism, the park promises a world of magic and endless possibilities. It is branded as a place of escape, capable of perpetually reaching new heights of imagination to fuel the maintenance of the fabricated dream world it sells. Disney World is home to four theme parks: Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot Center, and Hollywood Studios. Within Magic Kingdom, visitors can discover a place called Fantasyland, home of the famous ride called Its a Small World. It opened in 1966 and became one of the parks most beloved attraction.1 The visitors are invited to sing a classic hymn advocating world peace, while leisurely enjoying a small boat cruise. This gentle ten-minute journey allows for the viewer to observe different cultures from across continents in the form of displays. The ride is filled with hundreds of dolls representing children from all over the globe. An inevitable question arises: how can a single fabricated display of a few meters wide be able to summarize a countrys entire culture? Disney World answered that question by relying on the portrayal of each nations biggest stereotypes. The result is a very problematic depiction of other countries. The racist showcasing of the African continent falls victim to the juxtaposition of those controversial clichés.

    International Day Of Peace

The , sometimes called World Peace Day, is observed annually on 21 September. It is dedicated to peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, and can be celebrated by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone. The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the day as a day of preventing violence and a cease-fire. The celebration of this day is recognized by many nations and people. In 2013, for the first time, the day has been dedicated to , i.e. by the key preventive means to reduce war sustainably.

The ride and the song have been referenced several times, some of them reflecting on how annoying the song is to many people.

  • The retailer incentive cover to Uncle Scrooge #409, drawn by Thom Pratt, features Scrooge, Huey, Dewey, and Louie riding It’s a Small World.
  • The song is played as part of the Ice Cream Beat minigame which can be found in Disney Town, in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.
  • In the movie Tomorrowland, the 1964 World’s Fair version of the attraction is seen in Frank Walker‘s flashback.
  • It’s a Small World is an important location in the first book of the Kingdom Keepers series, Disney After Dark. The Keepers are searching for references to the sun, the clouds, the wind, and mountains across attractions in the Magic Kingdom. This leads them to It’s a Small World because of the big Mayan sun at the end of the Americas scene. Once they start riding the attraction late at night, the Keepers notice the dolls have been brought to life by the Overtakers to attack them. Following the lyrics of the song, “A smile means friendship to everyone” the Keepers are able to easily defeat the mindless dolls by smiling at them. Still, they are not able to find any clue in the sun. After they figure out they need 3-D glasses based on a hint Walt Disney gave to Wayne, they return to the attraction and are able to see three letters painted in the sun: a “Y”, an “I”, and an “R”.

    Small World’s Crawford Connection

Most people credit Walt Disney with the creation of it’s a small world. But we also have screen legend Joan Crawford to thank for bringing the original idea to fruition. Back in the early 1960s, Pepsi-Cola was struggling to come up with a concept for its 1964 World’s Fair pavilion. Crawford–the widow of Pepsi chairman Al Steele and a member of the company’s board of directors at the time–suggested that her colleagues call up her old friend Walt. When the board later balked at funding what the Imagineers had dreamed up, Crawford stood up and declared, in inimitable Mommy Dearest fashion, “We are going to do this!” And so they did.

BAY LAKE, Fla. As Walt Disney World prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the so-called happiest place on Earth, it only seems right to take a deep dive into the history of the ride dubbed the happiest cruise that ever sailed.

Known for its classic and catchy song, along with its vibrant animatronic dolls, Its a Small World truly has a long history, one that dates to the 1964 Worlds Fair in New York.

Disney shared with News 6 a little bit about its background and how it got to where it is today.

In 1964, Walt Disney was asked to create an attraction for the PepsiCo Pavilion at New Yorks World Fair that would support the UNICEF foundation. The initial concept developed was given the name Children of the World as a working title. It would be a salute to the worlds children and support UNICEF.

On the first walk-through, each of the audio animatronic dolls inside the attraction sang their own National Anthem in multiple different languages, resulting in a cacophony of sound. Walt told the Sherman Brothers, I need something and I need it right away. It should talk about unity, understanding and brotherly love and I need it yesterday because it has to be translated into 25 languages!

So the Sherman Brothers set about creating one tune that could be sung in all the worlds languages. Walt loved their rendition so much he changed the name of the attraction to match the song Its a Small World.
