Walt Disney World Resort Safety Measures
Disney World theme parks, hotels, restaurants, attractions, services and other experiences may be modified, limited in capacity and subject to limited availability or even closure. Disney has implemented the following safety measures based on the guidance of government officials and health advisers:
- Cleanliness and sanitization: Disney has increased cleaning and disinfection measures, and will continue to hold this standard. While regular cleaning has been reduced in frequency since first reopening in 2020, the hand sanitizers remain. Note that finger scanning at the touchpoints has returned.
- Cast training: Disney provided new training and reinforcement to emphasize a strong culture of health and safety among its cast members.
- Face coverings: The mask policy is ever-changing, based on current health guidelines. See our separate post for more details!
- Contactless payment: Payment through MagicBands, Apple Pay and Google Pay is available at restaurants and retail shops. Mobile ordering at restaurants has been expanded and is highly encouraged or required.
For Disney Worlds 50th Anniversary A Look Back At The Mouse That Changed Florida
In the early 1960s, envoys were sent out to clandestinely purchase parcels of land across Central Florida. Walt Disney made it official in 1965.
At a packed press conference, with Florida Gov. Haydon Burns and Walts brother Roy by his side, Disney announced he was building another Disneyland, though on a much bigger scale.
On Oct. 1, 1971, Magic Kingdom opened at the Walt Disney World Resort. Florida has never been the same.
Disney World has since become the worlds most-visited tourist attraction. And its not a cheap one. On the low end, a five-day visit, including airfare, lodging and tickets, could cost about $3,500 for a family of four, according to the personal finance website GOBankingRates. And that doesnt include food, souvenirs and other amenities.
At the time, the construction of what at first was called Vacation Kingdom was estimated to cost $500 million to turn 27,000 acres of Florida scrub land into a complete family-oriented vacation center. In comparison, the modern incarnation of Disney is estimated to have spent $500 million for just one area, the Star Wars land that opened at Disneys Hollywood Studios two years ago.
Theme park expert and writer Arthur Levine said Disneys 50th anniversary offers a polarized nation a safe haven. For a brief while anyway, they can become the America for which Americans long, not the America that exists beyond the manicured grounds.
Disney’s Star Wars Land Food: Everything To Eat And Drink In Galaxy’s Edge
You’ll eat in the Crown of Corellia Dining Room, with breakfast and lunch sounding like standard hotel fare .
The dinners seem more theatrical, with the first night including “a special musical appearance by a galactic superstar.” Day 2’s meal has a Taste Around the Galaxy theme and includes three courses “inspired by the geography and environments of iconic destination planets throughout the galaxy.” So you can expect Tatooine toasties, Coruscant cheese and Mon Calamari crustaceans or something like that.
First Look: We Toured Disneys New Star Wars Hotel Opening Next Week
Next week, Walt Disney World is launching an unusual hotel called Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. It will be an immersive and quite expensive two-night experience that makes visitors feel like they are aboard a spaceship in the Star Wars universe.
On Thursday, we took a four-hour tour for media and many a gushing social media influencer who could only bring cell phones and small video cameras to document their trip in the spaceship that Disney calls the Halcyon.
It opens March 1, and the whole month is already sold out as are all but two days in April.
With a two-night minimum stay, prices start at $4,809 for two adults and rise to more than $6,000 for a family of four, depending on the cabin. That includes all of your food, entertainment,a port excursion to visit the Star Wars land in Hollywood Studios, light saber training, droid racing and other activities. In comparison, a family of four can take a Disney cruise for under $3,000 or over $7,000, depending on the ship.
The hotel feels like a cruise ship on land, with a cast of characters played by skillful improv actors who interact with the guests aboard what they say is a recently remodeled 275-year-old ship that travels the galaxy. Han Solo and Princess Leia went on the Halcyon for their honeymoon, according to the Disney Imagineers.
Pre Shows Return To Disney World Attractions
Over the last few months, more and more experiences have returned to Walt Disney World, and now we have even more great news to share with you as pre-shows have returned to some of the most popular attractions.
Here is a list of the pre-shows that have returned as of this writing:
- Dinosaur Previously the room with the movie explaining your mission was empty and you walked through. Now the pre-show film has returned and you get the usual film with Dr. Marsh and Dr. Seeker.
- Avatar Flight of Passage The decontamination room is back and guests are scanned as usual during the pre-show.
- Haunted Mansion The Stretching Room is back as one of the best effects in Disney imagineering.
- Mickey and Minnies Runaway Railway The cute Mickey & Minnie short before the last section of the queue is back as well as the explosion effect in the wall.
- Rock n Roller Coaster Areosmith is back in the pre-show and you now have free back stage tickets to the show!
- Test Track The design station are is now open again so have fun building your dream car.
- Tower of Terror This pre-show with Rod Sterling is one of the most timeless in any Disney World ride and really gets riders scarred before plummeting 13 stories.
When the Disney World theme parks reopened most of the attractions came back without their respective pre-show areas. At that time Disney was enforcing a strict 6-foot physical distancing guideline and it was just not possible to fit people safely into those thighs spaces.

The History Of Walt Disney World And Its Opening 50 Years Ago
FOX 35 Special | Disney: 50 Years of Magic
FOX 35 News is counting down to Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary. In part one of a two-part series, we present “Disney: 50 Years of Magic.” We give you a behind-the-scenes look at the Disney Vault and look at how Walt Disney chose Orlando as home to Walt Disney World Resort and how he acquired the land he needed to build the Magic Kingdom.
ORLANDO, Fla. – Walt Disney World opened in Central Florida on October 1st, 1971, after years of anticipation. Thousands of guests entered Magic Kingdom, the first park to open at the resort, and were greeted with fun and fantasy around every corner.
In the 50 years since, the Florida resort went on to open three more theme parks, two water parks, dozens of resort hotels, and a massive retail, dining, and entertainment district.
It all started on November 15th, 1965. According to Disney, this is when Walt Disney and his brother, Roy O. Disney, officially announced the plans for their Florida project in a press conference held in Downtown Orlando. Almost a year later, on October 27th, 1966, Walt Disney filmed an outline for his Florida plans, including details on Walt Disney Worlds location.

When Should You Book Your Next Disney Vacation
Now that Walt Disney World is open again, you may be wondering when is a good time to visit? This is a good question for you, especially if you already have a Walt Disney World vacation coming up in the coming weeks or even months or had to cancel one recently.
Before we talk specifically about this situation you should read our guide to the Best Times to Visit Disney World. That helps you to make the best decision based on all the factors like weather, crowds, events, etc, as well as ranking every month.
Also, our 2021 & 2022 Disney World Crowd Calendars are great at identifying the least crowded times of year to visit, while also saving you money!
Since the closure, weve had many readers tell us they have an upcoming vacation to Walt Disney World and they dont know whether they should postpone their upcoming trip or go on with their current plans. We also have a lot of readers who had their trips canceled during the closure period.
First, let me say I hear you and I feel really bad for anyone who was looking forward to a trip to Disney in the coming weeks and had it canceled. As adults, we are obviously disappointed not to go, and how your kids must have felt after something theyve looked forward to so much was canceled. It stinks big time.
Just try to understand that closing Disney World has been for the health and safety of you and your family and the millions of other guests going, plus the thousands of cast members working there.
Star Wars Land: Everything We Saw At Disneyland’s Galaxy’s Edge
Then you’ll be able to ride Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run and have lunch at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. This lunch credit gets you a meal at another participating Disney’s Hollywood Studios restaurant if you prefer, but that would break the Star Wars immersion.
You’ll return to the Halcyon in the afternoon and can engage in lightsaber training, a droid racing competition, model ship building and a sabacc tournament before dinner.
This evening will be taken up with cocktails and the Taste Around the Galaxy dinner, before what sounds like the climactic story moment in which you can put your heist in motion or bring a stolen ship aboard.
The experience ends with a “spectacular finale” that runs until 11 p.m, but it’s unclear what that will be. Most likely, the cast you’ve spent the past two days with will bow as John Williams’ The Throne Room from A New Hope’s medal ceremony plays.

Disneyland And Disney World Have Different Parks Themed Lands
California is home to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. Disneyland is smaller and has nine themed lands including Main Street, Fantasyland, Star Wars: Galaxy Edge and the Downtown Disney District.
In Florida, Disney World is home to the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Disneys Hollywood Studios. Disney World also includes the ESPN Sports zone, several golf courses, two water parks Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach and the Disney Springs District.
Fun fact about the Walt Disney Resort in Florida: the area is managed by a small government called the Reedy Creek Improvement District.
What You Need To Know
While more details are always coming out, we do have a lot of info about the reopening and how things are going so far in Disney World.
Disney Parks worldwide are using the same reopening and operating methods, some of which were taken from the way Shanghai Disneyland reopened in May 2020. These procedures have been replicated in Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris.

Does Galactic Starcruiser Have An In
It sure does. The luxury starcruiser is known as the Halcyon, a Corellian MPO-1400 operated by Chandrila Star Line, and it’s designed to cater to the Star Wars galaxy’s fancy folk.
“You’ll voyage to the far reaches of the galaxy in legendary comfort and style,” reads Disney’s in-universe blurb. “Recently refurbished and reoutfitted, the starcruiser combines modern conveniences with the romance of the age of exploration.”
This vessel has operated for hundreds of years in-universe, since it’s shown up during recent stories set in the High Republic era and the Galactic Starcruiser narrative takes place between the events of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. This places it during the war with the First Order, which starts 30 years after Return of the Jedi .
Its history is being explored in Marvel’s Halcyon Legacy comic series, which will see characters like Anakin Skywalker, Padmé Amidala and Lando Calrissian getting into adventures on the starship across various eras.
The Halcyon was designed by Shug Drabor, who’s an Anzellan like the beloved Babu Frik from The Rise of Skywalker. He’s shown up in the first issue of Halcyon Legacy and recent High Republic-era novel Midnight Horizon.
It’ll also be the location of Leia Organa and Han Solo’s honeymoon, shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi. That story will be told in novel The Princess and the Scoundrel, which comes out Aug. 16.
This Story Is Part Of A Group Of Stories Called
Its a common saying at Walt Disney World, one youll hear upon arriving at a seaside boardwalk hotel, telling a Grand Floridian Cafe server where youre from, or scanning a MagicBand to board Disneys Magical Express airport bus. It reinforces everything about Disneys trademark wonder and nostalgia, not to mention the distinctly American sentimentality of saving hard-earned money and spending it on the same vacation you may have experienced as a child.
After four months of being stuck in my own home, it took a ride on Space Mountains shuttle to bring me back to pre-pandemic times, whipping through turns and drops Id known so well yet somewhat forgotten during the Magic Kingdoms 117-day closure. Here I was, double-masked, with Bath & Body Works Sweet Pea-scented antibacterial gel at the ready, thrill-bound for the first time in what felt like forever.
Disney World isnt just a personal pastime its my office. As a theme park journalist, Ive been everywhere in the name of reporting international parks, cruise ships, inside Floridas castle but this was my first trip to Tomorrowland in the midst of a global health crisis.
I was finally home, I thought. But should I be?
