Scooters At Packed Disney World Parks Spawn Accidents Lawsuits And Glares

Early at the Magic Kingdom entrance, its another day of fun about to begin as Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirate’s Life For Me! blasts on the speakers and the first electric scooters are lined up to go.

But by the time the park officially opens at 9 a.m., half of the scooters available for the day are already rented to anyone at least 18 willing to pay $50 a day. Other park-goers roll in through the turnstiles on motorized scooters theyve rented outside the parks or own themselves.

Will the scooters run out? asks a woman who looks worried. They are usually gone by 11 a.m., a Disney employee tells her with an apologetic smile.

Scooters are as visible at Disney parks as Mickey Mouse ears and turkey legs, and they provide a lifeline for people, some with hidden disabilities, who cant walk the massive grounds. But amid rapidly growing Disney crowds, the vehicles have brought on a rise of civil lawsuits filed by people complaining about being run over or drivers saying they were injured in accidents.

Disney recently banned oversized strollers, but when it comes to scooters, the theme park is limited how it can regulate them because of federal law governing rights for people with disabilities.

He added any such rule would likely require the U.S. Department of Justices approval.

People need to realize disability is broadly defined, Shiotani said, adding that anyone who can walk only a few steps or even a few blocks is protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Should I Rent A Wheelchair Or Ecv Rather Than Walk The Park Resort & Recreation Areas

Are you toying with the idea of using a wheelchair or ECV while youre at Disney, but youre unsure? Or are others telling you to do it, but you dont really want to? Dont rule it out too quickly! Even if you dont require a wheelchair in your daily life, you may want to consider using one at Disney World.

If you tire easily, or if youre dealing with any of the following, a wheelchair or ECV/scooter can make your trip so much better:

  • Pain
  • Anything that physical activity can worsen

Many people who dont normally use a wheelchair or ECV feel very uncomfortable with the idea of using one. Its understandable, but the wheelchair/ECV can help help you conserve energy, reduce pain, and avoid irritating your condition.

If you use an ECV/scooter, you can have all this while also having freedom, independence and mobility . Your trip will be so much more fun, and youll be so much more comfortable than if you choose to walk.

Heres one Disney fans comment that we find to be typical:

I was so resistant to the idea of a wheelchair. I dont need one at home, and I didnt want to be looked at as an invalid. After experiencing pure exhaustion and a major worsening of my pain after a day at the park, I finally rented an electric scooter. It was fantastic. By the end of the day I felt much, much better with the scooter than I had on foot. Now I always use a scooter at Disney.

How To Transport Your Rented Mobility Scooter Or Manual Wheelchair

This commentary will discuss how to transport your rented mobility scooter or manual wheelchair. Its great to make use of all of the Disney transportation modes while on Disney property. Use those to get you and your ECV or wheelchair from here, there, and everywhere within the Disney complex. However, there will be occasions when you want to be able to bypass the transportation system. You may want to go outside the complex for dinner or to another Florida attraction and take your rented scooter or manual wheelchair with you. In most instances, youll be able to do so.

How Far Do You Really Have To Walk At Disney World

When I asked members of my Facebook group who track their walking distance how far they walked per day in each of the parks, I got approximately a whopping:

Average of 6-12 miles a day!!!

Thats because you wont just be walking straight through perimeter of the parks. Youll be walking through the parks, going from attraction to attraction, zigging and zagging, and sometimes retracing your steps, and walking inclines and declines.

Then there are the ride and attraction queues. They can be super long. In fact, the queues for Kilimanjaro Safaris in Animal Kingdom and Soarin in Epcot are each over ¼ mile long.

Also consider that youll be standing while you wait in lines for the attractions, dining, transportation, etc. On a busy park day you can stand in line for as much as an hour or even 1 ½ hours for a single attraction. It can even be longer if youre visiting on a peak crowd day.

There is no seating in the queues, so you will not be able to sit.

Check out our photos of a couple of queue lines in the Magic Kingdom. Granted this was a fairly busy day, but this is not unusual.

So if any of this sounds strenuous, painful, tiring or difficult to you, we strongly suggest that you rent a wheelchair or ECV.

It will mean a much better time for you, and it will mean a much better time for your family.

Still not convinced?

Here are testimonials from people who did NOT want to use a scooter, fought it, but finally gave in:

If You Are Renting A Car

So You Got Injured Before a Walt Disney World Vacation ...

If you use a Disabled Parking Permit, be sure to bring it with you on vacation. As long as you have a valid permit and identification, you can use it in your rental car. When you enter the parking lots at the theme parks, cast members will direct you to the Disabled Parking Area. If you do not have a regular disability parking permit, you may still be able to use medical parking lots at Disney World let the cast member directing traffic know you need assistance and access to the medical lot.

What Is The Cost To Rent An Electric Wheelchair For Islands Of Adventure

The cost for renting an electric wheelchair at Islands of Adventure varies. Two choices:

  • Rent directly from Islands of Adventure inside their complex once you arrive OR
  • Rent from an outside company.
  • To rent a mobility scooter for Islands of Adventure from Scooter Vacations, we deliver to your hotel, resort, timeshare, etc. Our scooters range in price from $25-$40 a day depending on the model. We offer multi-day rental discounts for longer rentals and have many special partner discounts and special coupon offers on our website.

Transportable models for up to a 450 Lbs. capacity are $25-35 per day and luxury on-property only models are $35-$40 a day.

If you rent from Islands of Adventure, it is a $100 deposit and $50 a day for a mobility scooter and $12 a day for a wheelchair. If you use a credit card for the $100 daily deposit at Islands of Adventure you must return the wheelchair or ECV to the location you picked it up from to get your deposit back. You cannot pick up at one park and leave it at another upon departure. You can reserve in advance but they do sell out quickly and you MUST be there by 11 am to pick up your rental. Also, they do not rent ECVs for nighttime events due to battery re-charging issues.

Taking The Mobility Scooter To Your Room

If you decide to take a scooter into your room, make sure it is an ADA-accessible room. This will give you more room to store your scooter and access to a ramp so your scooter can easily move to the second floor if needed. You also need to be aware that the scooter needs to fit through the door easily, so be cautious when driving the scooter into your room. Otherwise, ask the resort if you can park the scooter in the hallway.

    No Reservations In Advance

The only bad thing about renting scooters at Disney World is that they cant be reserved in advance. Its done on a first-come, first-served basis. You might want to arrive early so you can be sure of getting a power scooter. Of course, you can always rent scooters from vendors other than Walt Disney World, and they can be reserved.

The problem here is that outside scooters cant be delivered to the Disney theme parks, although they can be delivered to many Orlando Resorts. Youll have to transport the scooter to Disney World yourself, so youll have to make sure the scooter folds down and that itll fit in your vehicle. From what I can find, handicap scooters arent allowed on most standard shuttle services to Disney World.

A How Much Can You Lift Accounting For Your Physical Lifting Capabilities While In The Process Of Transporting A Mobility Scooter Or Manual Wheelchair

Using the DAS or renting an ECV (scooter) at WDW?

When I referred to individuals earlier, I meant the person who is renting or using the unit and their physical lifting capabilities. Suppose you have help loading the mobility aid thats great. However, what about if you have no support? Disassembly is easy, but could you lift the individual sections by yourself to put into your car trunk or cargo area? You must consider this possibility!

Which Model Is Best If I Am Staying On

For guests staying at Walt Disney World you may select the Snap, Dart, Wish, Destination or Fantasy no matter which resort you are staying at. If you are considering The Dream we recommend it for only those staying at hotels that have direct access to Boats and Monorails and/or direct access to the facilities you will be visiting. While it does fit on the buses, you do need to turn the front wheel to fit within the ADA prescribed public transportation dimensions. Because of the Dreams unique look, many bus drivers assume it is not compliant with ADA public transportation rules and may attempt to limit access. So as to avoid any un-pleasantries, we suggest for a large battery life, luxury model you select the Wish or Fantasy.

The largest disassembled piece for a 3-wheel Victory 10 weighs about 56.5 lbs versus 62.0 lbs for the 4-wheel model. The assembly consists of the front wheel, the floor/frame where your feet rest, the folded tiller, the seat post, etc. Look to the images below for reference. The rear wheels and motor/transaxle assembly weigh about 48 lbs.

Gold Mobility Scooters also rents the smaller GoGo Sport ECV, which supports up to 325 pounds. This scooter is the easiest to transport due to its smaller size and weight of the individual sections. Additionally, the model comes in the 3-wheel and 4-wheel versions. The heaviest disassembled part weighs about 35.8 lbs for the 3-wheel and 44.0 lbs for the 4-wheel GoGo Sport. I could not find the exact weight, but the rear wheels and motor/transaxle assembly weigh 40 +/- lbs from what I could determine.
