While Walt Disney World may be a magical place, that magic unfortunately could not protect it from Covid-19 and all the turmoil it brought with it. Upon the Florida parks reopening after a nearly three-month shutdown, the world of Disney was almost unrecognizable. Scheduled parades, character meet and greets, and stage shows were all suspended, with a promise of their return in the future.
Disney World parks were running limited hours with limited capacity and while these changes will eventually revert, the Extra Magic Hours program is a thing of the past. In its place stands Early Theme Park Entry, the runner up and distinctly different sister to EMH that needs to be considered in your Walt Disney World Vacation Planning.

Extended Evening Hours Are My Favorite
Are your kids night owls? Want to impress tweens and teens? Nothing says fun mom like hitting Magic Kingdom until 11pm and EPCOT until midnight. They will carry this extended evening hours magical Disney vacation memory for years to come.
If your family is like mine, youve got kids of varying ages. Thats great in real life. But at Disney, juggling kids who range in age from newborn to teenager is a logistical nightmare. The smaller kids are interested in some of the more juvenile-themed rides, the teen wants to do all the thrill rides. And the baby cant go on any ride with a height restriction. We dont always have two grownups on trips. So what is a solo parent to do?
How to Please Everyone
Extended Evening Hours for the win! We ride all the rides the little girls want to go on . Then my teen son can race through the lines for the thrill rides with his sister. Since hes over 14 he can bring her through without me. Then I hang back with the littles. They emerge excited and are ready to tackle the next ride. A special treat? Bring the oldest back for some one-on-one fun. My son still talks about getting a soda at 2am as we walked back to the monorail after Extra Magic Hours. It happened when he was 8. Hes 17 now.
TravelingMom Tip: If youre planning to visit EPCOT on your trip, make it a late night too! Extended Evening Hours at EPCOT are a great time to try the foods of the World Showcase without waiting in long lines.
What Time Are Extra Magic Hours
Mornings: 1 hour before opening | 8am- 9am
Get up early enough to be at the gates at 7:30am regardless of which park youre visiting. Extra Magic Hours in the mornings only work if youre able to be there right on time, giving you the full hour to explore and get on rides. An hour isnt a long time, so even being a half hour late, totally negates the fact that you woke up early, because the crowds will be right on your tail.
Evenings: 3 hours after close | 9pm- 12am , 11pm- 2am
Extra magic hours in the evening are best if you can try for a weeknight because then youre mostly dealing with other vacationers staying on site and not the locals. This lightens the crowd and helps you get through the lines faster.

Are Extra Magic Hours Worth It
While planning your days based on the availability of Extra Magic hours may not sound like a great vacation planning strategy, you only have to consider a few things to see if the effort is worth it for you and your family/fellow vacationers. Ask yourself these questions.
If you answered YES to these questions then grab a pen and paper and check out Disneys Park calendar in the link above so you can start planning your 15 hour days you are built to take advantage of Extra Magic Hours.
If you answered NO to these questions then you should look at the Extra Magic Hours as a perk as opposed to a plan to maximize your Disney vacation. As a perk, Extra Magic Hours are delightful, a nice surprise that allows you to stay in the park a little longer or enter the gates a little earlier.

Extended evening hours moved from Wednesday, February 2 to Friday, February 4 at Magic Kingdom.
So far, Disney has remained on schedule since its debut in early October. What could possibly make them switch things up? Will all future dates be moved to Friday or is this a one time thing?

Disneys Animal Kingdom Tips
In Animal Kingdom, head for AVATAR Flight of Passage or Expedition Everest if you are adults or have older kids. Both of those rides dont have Genie+ times, you pay to ride Lightning Lanes so youll save cash knocking one off first thing. Animal Kingdom is probably the trickiest park for bundling rides. Its large. Even if you power walk, it takes time to move from one area to another. Pick your priority and make Genie+ or Lightning Lane reservations for the rest.
If you hit Flight of Passage first, spend early entry in The World of AVATAR. Being realistic 30 minutes isnt a long time. Its going to take you 30 minutes to bust your butt over to the ride and get through the small queue. Youll be riding it as the park opens to everyone else. Then head over to Navi River ride because everyone who just entered will be lining up for AVATAR.
With Little Kids
With smaller kids or animal lovers I highly recommend going to Kilimanjaro Safaris. I like to be in line at Kilimanjaro Safaris when the attraction opens. In the morning the animals are more active.
For evening hours Im a huge fan of Expedition Everest in the dark! With older kids you can use the single rider line to go through multiple times in a row.
Who Can Go To Extended Evening Theme Park Hours
Note: These are typically the most expensive resorts, but you can save some money when staying at the Deluxe Villas by renting DVC points.

Extended Evening Theme Park Hours Will Allow Eligible Guests To Stay In Either Magic Kingdom Or Epcot For 2 Hours Past Official Park Closing
For years and years, the onsite benefits you got from staying at a Walt Disney World Resort were fairly consistent. You had access to Extra Magic Hours, use of the free Magical Express service, and even perks like complimentary MagicBands.
But, after the parks reopened and with the big 50th Anniversary Celebration kicking off, Disney has opted to make some changes.
Magical Express is being replaced, you now have to pay for MagicBands, and the once popular Extra Magic Hours have been retired, with 2 new options for enjoying the park past official park hours taking its place:
- Early Theme Park Entry
- Extended Evening Theme Park Hours
Starting 1 October 2021 Walt Disney World Will Begin Offering Early Entry & Extended Evening Hours
