Disney World With A 1 Year Old

Pirates Of The Caribbean

Disney with a One Year Old -DO IT! | 1st Birthday at Disney World

Location AdventurelandHeight Requirement Any Height

Pirates of the Caribbean is a part of any best Disney rides list, including one for babies and small children. If you have a 3 or 4-year old, they may already be into pirates, in which case this will be their favorite ride at Disney World.

Its a slow-moving boat ride which is pretty tame and only has one small drop, but nothing they cant handle. Some of the scenes at the beginning of the ride are dark and might be a little scary, but most toddlers love it. The music is perhaps the best of any ride and will have your child singing along. Dont forget the shop at the attraction exit, they will love all the pirate gear!

Meet Tinker Bell In Magic Kingdom

After meeting Mickey Mouse, head on over to Meet Tinker Bell at Town Square Theater. You mayalso get a fast pass for this meet and greet. It is honestly one of my favoritemeets because of the immersive environment.

Throughthe magic of pixie dust you are shrunk down to Tinker Bells size. Theimmersive environment solidifies the illusion. Your child can stand next tocrayons bigger than she is and raspberries bigger than her head.

You Don’t Have To Enter The Parks To Have Fun

If you are going to Walt Disney World with a tot in tow, don’t underestimate the power of the Resort’s transportation system! When in doubt, a ride on the monorail or one of the transportation boats is always a fun option for toddlers, as is a ride on the bus or the Disney Skyliner.

My kids didn’t know these weren’t rides, because the Disney Magic is throughout every nook and cranny of the property, including the transportation! When you visit Disney World with toddlers, the little mousketeers can have fun just going for a ride around on the monorail, on the Disney Skyliner, on the buses, or on the boats.

Best Value Resorts For Toddlers

For Values, Pop Century and Art of Animation are our top recommendations.

Art of Animation

Art of Animation is especially fun if your toddler happens to be really into Finding Nemo, Cars, The Lion King or Little Mermaid.

As a bonus, most of the rooms at Art of Animation are suites, allowing you to have separate rooms, 2 bathrooms, and a kitchenette which could be really handy .

Pop Century

Pop Century is another great option. Unlike the All Star Resorts, Pop Century doesnt share its transportation with any other resorts. This is a nice bonus when youre trying to get a sleeping toddler back to your resort.

Rooms at Pop Century were recently refurbished and the new layout likely appeals to many families. The standard rooms at Pop Century all have queen-sized beds, one of which is a Murphy Bed that folds down from the wall.

Many guests have reported that they really like the ability of being able to fold the one bed up when it isnt in use because it gives them more floor space, which is nice if you have little ones that need some room to play.

Another nice feature of the refurbished rooms is a sliding door between the sink area of the bathroom and the sleeping space. This makes it a lot easier for people to get ready in the morning without disturbing those that might still be sleeping.

Toddlers Can Be Entertained While Waiting In Line

Disney World with a One Year Old

Some of the rides also have toddler-size entertainment while waiting in line. Two of my favorites for this in Magic Kingdom are Dumbo the Flying Elephant, which has an entire indoor play space, and the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

This is why I love visiting Disney World with toddlers. Disney thinks of everything!

At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the whole Toy Story area is such a huge hit! Not only do toddlers feel like a toy in Andy’s room or his back yard, but there are toddler-friendly rides over here. And, often you can see Buzz Lightyear and Woody for a photo opp!

While waiting for a turn to ride Dumbo the Flying Elephant, little ones can enjoy this indoor play area.

Disney Resort Hotel Rooms Come With Amenities For Toddlers And Babies

The Disney Resort Hotels will come with Pack n’ Plays and high chairs in each room. Call before you go to confirm, so you don’t have to bring your own.

If you stay at one of the Disney Vacation Club hotels, you often will find laundry in the room or on-site and have a kitchenette. We find that when traveling with little ones for a trip to Disney, having laundry and a kitchen area makes a huge difference!

Disney resorts have many amenities for toddlers and babies, including toddler-friendly splash areas!

Tips For Disney World Rides For Babies And Toddlers:

FastPass+ is your friend. As soon as you have your park tickets, select your three FastPass+ rides. Make your selections up to 30 days before your trip with tickets only, or up to 60 days prior with Disney hotel reservations and park tickets.

FastPass+ is still your friend. After youve used up your three rides, you can book more via the My Disney Experience app or onsite at one of the park kiosks.

Dont risk traumatizing your child and force them on to something, even if you believe they will enjoy it. Cast Members will remove people from a ride if the children seem afraid.

Buy The Memory Maker Photopass Option

Its a must for Disney World with toddlers.

Youre at Disney, youre herding around your family. Moods fluctuate, you feel like a hot mess. Do you really also want to be responsible for all of the photo memories of this trip? No! You want to be in the photos too!

Memory Maker allows you to tap your Disney MagicBand every time your picture is taken. The photos are added to your My Disney Experience account so you can download them later. You must add this option no less than 3 days before your trip starts.

The pictures we were able to download were so much better than the ones we took. These are trained professionals clicking a mile a minute. They may capture the moments in between funny face and scowl that are pure perfection.

TravelingMom Tip: Disney photographers will take photos with your smartphone. Its one of the best free things at Disney!

Tips For Doing Disney With Toddlers

Disney World with a One Year Old | Our Experience & Tips

Here are a few more helpful tips that will help you to navigate a Disney Vacation with toddlers and small kids:

Nap Time: While it may be tempting to go all-out in the parks, every day of your trip, your children might not be able to handle that fast pace. You know them best, and if they are the kind that need some downtime, we suggest scheduling some nap time in the afternoon.

Be Selective with Rides: You also know how much excitement your children can take and how adventurous they are. Encourage them to try new things, but dont force them to go on a ride they are scared of, or they may be traumatized and not be keen on coming back to Disney World anytime soon.

Spend More Time at the Magic Kingdom: By far the best park for toddlers is the Magic Kingdom and if you have small children you should allocate a good portion of your trip going there. We suggest spending two full days at the Magic Kingdom in order to do all the rides and not have to rush through which would be very stressful and not realistic with toddlers.

Use FastPass+: We always recommend people use the FastPass+ service at Disney World, but even more so if you have small children. FastPass+ lets you skip the lines for your favorite rides so you dont have to spend hours waiting in line.

Tips And Packing Essentials

If you are looking for tips for visiting Disney World with a 3 year old, these are our top pieces of advice:

  • Use Disney transportation so you dont have to mess with car seats.
  • Rent or bring a stroller even for older kids.
  • Make a relaxed itinerary and expect to move slowly with a little one.
  • Pack ponchos!! This is especially true if you are visiting in the summer months.
  • Take time to enjoy the pools at the resort.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that dry quickly. We like Keen Seacamp Sandals.
  • Pack Sunscreen.

What To Do If Your Child Is Sick At Disney World

Littlechildren mean lots of germs and not the best hygiene habits. My oldest daughterhas been sick at Disney on more than one occasion. If you go to the DisneyFirst Aid Station a nurse can take your childs temperature and offer Tylonal,a bandaid, or cough medicine.

Duringone particular trip, my daughter went downhill fast. She was a total mess. Thenurse offered us a cot to have her rest. An hour of sleep in a quiet dark roommade all the difference in her health and our day.

Thereis a First Aid Station at every Disney park and it is totally worth thestopfree of charge.

Magic Kingdom Itinerary For Toddlers

I suggest creating a touring plan and attempting to stick to it. But, tell yourself that it is OKAY if your plan doesnt work out.

My toddler gets distracted so easily at Magic Kingdom that we often dont get to fit in all the attractions we want. And thats fine.

If your toddler notices ducks walking down the street and wants to follow them, embrace the moment without trying to rush to the Its a Small World attraction.

Below is a sample of an itinerary I would use at Magic Kingdom for my toddler. Note that I typically plan for two attractions per hour. No matter how hard we try to move quickly, two activities per hour seem to be the max for us.

  • 9:00 Arrive at Park/ Peter Pans Flight/ The Barnstormer
  • 10:00 Dumbo the Flying Elephant/ Petes Silly Side Show-Daisy and Minnie
  • 11:00 Petes Silly Side Show- Donald and Goofy/ Lunch
  • 12:00 Move It! Shake It! Street Party
  • 1:00 Nap in Stroller
  • 3:00 Snack/ Enchanted Tales with Belle
  • 4:00 Under the Sea/ Its a Small World
  • 5:00 Jungle Cruise/ Magic Carpets of Aladdin
  • 6:00 Dinner/ Back to Resort

I started the day at 9:00 even though Magic Kingdom often opens at 8:00 AM. We are never able to arrive at the gates for opening when I have a toddler in tow. Getting dressed, eating breakfast, and traveling to the park always take longer than I anticipate.

Disneys Animal Kingdom With A Toddler

Disneyland With A 1 Year Old: Tips For A Magical Day ...

If you are planning a vacation to Walt Disney World, you may be wondering which rides your toddler can go on. Each of the parks at WDW offers lots of rides and attractions for even the smallest kids. But, one of the best parks at Disney for toddlers is Animal Kingdom.

Animal Kingdom truly makes you feel like you have entered the jungle with its lush landscape and exotic atomosphere. If your toddler is an animal lover, she will adore this well themed park at Disney World.

My husband and I love Animal Kingdom because it seems so much more relaxed and more spacious than the other parks. You dont notice the crowds as much, and you almost forget that you are in a theme park.

Strollers Can Be Your Greatest Asset And Your Worst Enemy

Unless you have an on-body carrier or super-human strength, theres a good chance you might want a stroller for your time in Disney World. And we have seen some pimped out strollers in our time at Disney.

Baby Strollers

These cribz-on-wheels can be just as frustrating as they are helpful but not for you! We made the mistakes so you dont have to.

Epcot Park Hopping Itinerary

We tend to use park hopper tickets for Epcot, mostly because its the only way I can talk my husband into going to Magic Kingdom!

When we are park hopping between Magic Kingdom and Epcot, we utilize the itinerary listed below.

In the morning, we head to Magic Kingdom to experience toddler attractions there. After our toddler falls asleep in her stroller, we leave Magic Kingdom and take the monorail to Epcot.

You can push your stroller straight onto the Monorail without having to fiddle with folding it up. This is nice because it allows your toddler to remain napping while you switch parks.

If you are planning to park hop between Magic Kingdom and EPCOT with your toddler, this is the itinerary we like:

  • 9:00 Arrive at Magic Kingdom/ Peter Pans Flight/ The Barnstormer
  • 10:00 Dumbo the Flying Elephant/ Petes Silly Side Show-Daisy and Minnie
  • 11:00 Petes Silly Side Show- Donald and Goofy/ Enchanted Tales with Belle
  • 12:00 Lunch/ Move It! Shake It! Street Party
  • 1:00 Nap in Stroller/ Head to EPCOT
  • 2:00 Use Rider Switch to ride big rides at EPCOT
  • 3:00 Snack/ World Showcase
  • 4:00 Frozen Ever After/ Meet Anna and Elsa
  • 5:00 Dinner/ Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along
  • 6:00 The Seas with Nemo/ Turtle Talk with Crush/ Coral Reefs and Animals
  • 7:00 Back to Resort

Toddler Snacks Are Plentiful

What’s a toddler’s life without snacking? Do bring snacks if visiting Disney World with toddlers. But rest assured, Walt Disney World has you covered on this front if you don’t or don’t have enough.

Some of my kids’ favorite snacks were sold in the parks and resort gift shops, only with the added pixie dust only Disney can provide!

I mean Mickey ear-shaped goldfish-style crackers? Of course, they taste better! Mickey-shaped pretzels definitely have a yummier flavor. Vegetable chips in the shape of Mickey’s head? You can’t even taste the vitamins. I didn’t even mention the Mickey-shaped soft pretzels, Mickey icecreams, and churros!

Your toddler will not go hungry at Disney World! And, of course, every restaurant and quick service spot offers kiddie menus as well.

Include Toddlers In Dining Reservations

Although you may not have to pay for a toddler meal at Disney World you must include the child in the number of people for a dining reservation.

For example, on a larger family trip there were six adults, one 8-year-old, and one 2-year old in our group. This meant I needed to make my Advanced Dining Reservation for a total of 8 people.

I know this can be confusing since you dont count toddlers for Disney World park reservations, but it is crucial that everyone in your party is counted for dining reservations.

The Magic Carpets Of Aladdin

Location AdventurelandHeight Requirement Any Height

Here is the next spinner ride, and its very similar to all the rest. The Magic Carpets of Aladdin is located in Adventureland, but there is no big difference between this and Dumbo, and it goes up and down and around the same. If your toddler likes one, they will like them all.

The nice thing about the Magic Carpets is they hold 4 people, so it makes a nice photo-op for the whole family together. Be careful for the water-spitting camel as your child may get slightly wet!

Bring Snacks And Buy A Treat

This Dole Whip Float hit the spot after riding on Jungle Cruise. Photo credit: Darren Cheung

My family definitely gets hangry if we dont get enough to eat.

I always have snacks for every member of my family in my bag. I usually have trail mix, granola bars, crackers, food pouches and other items that pack well.

These are often snacks I always bring no matter where we are. They arent special.

However, Disneyland is full of special and tasty treats. We like to partake in these treats throughout the day. Its a great way to distract preschoolers.

We love indulging with Dole Whip and churros!

Costumes Are Abundant At Disney

Disney with a One Year Old

Im not talking about the characters. Its the kids. One out of every five kids youll see in the theme parks will be in costume or sporting a Mickey Mouse or Minnie Mouse shirt. Of course, once your kiddos see this, theyll want to join the club. Think about this RIGHT NOW, before you get to Disney! Princess dresses in the parks run close to $60. Do yourself a favor and hit a Walmart or Target to buy one before you board that Disney-bound flight.

I was able to find a Princess Aurora dress and tiara for $27 total. I packed it in our luggage without our daughter knowing. Once we arrived, we had the princesses leave it as a surprise in our hotel room one morning. She wore it every day we were there. In retrospect, I should have bought 3 dresses and skipped packing normal clothes.
