Refurbishments & New Constructions
Refurbishments in December are rare due to the high crowds, but you will want to check our Walt Disney World construction / refurbishment calendar for the latest.
No notable refurbishments are scheduled for December 2022. As of this update, an opening date for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind has not been set, but the ride has been announced for summer 2022 and we expect that to open before December 2022.
With one big ride announced for summer, we dont expect TRON to debut until the last three months of the year, and we expect an opening no later than early December.
Disney World Events Indecember
One of the biggest reasons for visiting Disney World in December is because of all the different events going on. Take a look at some of the fun things you can experience when visiting the parks this month.
Disney Very Merriest After Hours Christmas Celebration at Magic Kingdom
The Christmas party at Disney World is going to look a bit different this year. Like last year, Mickeys Very Merry Christmas Party is put on hiatus because of Covid-concerns.
Instead, Disney has decided to replace the popular party with a new special ticketed event, Disney Very Merriest After Hours.
The four-hour experience with feature Minnies Wonderful Christmastime Fireworks, special opportunities to see Disney characters throughout the park and plenty of holiday cheer.
Epcot International Festival of the Holidays
Running the end of November through the first of the year is the Epcot International Festival of the Holidays where Epcot celebrates holiday traditions for each of the 11 World Showcase Nations.
You will find storytellers, festive decorations, food and music.
Hollywood Studios does a great job with decorating at Christmastime! The place to be at Hollywood Studios is along Sunset Boulevard.
Billboards will suddenly transform into cartoon shorts that features popular Disney characters discussing their love for the season.
And Tower of Terror even changes throughout the evening into different holdiay displays!

The Naughty And Nice Of Christmas Week At Disney World
My family has vacationed at Disney during Christmas week every year from 2009 to 2018. I say that because anytime I mention Christmas week at Disney, its almost immediately met with are you aware of how crowded it is? Yes. Yes I am. Im also aware of how expensive it is. But its also one of the most magical times of the yearso before I spoil the rest of this list, lets get into the Naughty and Nice of Christmas week at Disney .

Even if you aren’t into gardening, be sure to get a picture by the freshly trimmed hedges near the Imagination pavilion.
- Participate in the Egg-stravaganza scavenger hunt and search high and low for eggs around the World Showcase that depict your favorite Disney characters.
- If you happen to be in Disney World on St. Patrick’s Day make sure to take the time to go to the World Showcase’s United Kingdom Pavilion to enjoy the St. Patrick’s Day fun.

Its About The Shows Not Rides But
The parades, castle show and treats at the Disney Very Merriest After Hours are the highlights. You can dance at Club Tinsel, sample all the food, check out the holiday decorations without lots of crowds and let some of the rides wait for another day.
That said, there are a few rides you may not want to miss. For one, dont miss Jingle Cruise, one of the few rides to transform into a holiday-themed experience.
Additionally, you can make Genie+ reservations until the official park closing time, if you wish. My strategy has been to do as many rides as you want before the party really starts and then shift your attention to the unique elements of the evening. That said, if there are a few rides you want to hop on, waits range from essentially nothing on many rides to 10-20 minutes for the more popular ones, so you can certainly get a few rides in if you want to use your time that way.

When Does Disney World Christmas Start
So when does the 2021 Christmas season at Disney World start?
2021 Holiday season at Walt Disney World will be officially kicked off on November 12th, for the Spirit of the Season celebration. Its important to note that this year is going to be unlike any other Disney Christmas season we have experienced before, as WDW will also be celebrating its 50th Anniversary!
Luckily for all of us youll have plenty of time to visit Disney World during Christmas as the holiday season starts the minute Halloween is over. When the last Boo Bash After Hours Party ends on November 1, Magic Kingdom turns into a winter wonderland, as if Halloween didnt just exist the night before. All four Walt Disney World parks will be transformed with yuletide cheer by mid-November.
When To Visit Disneyland In 2022
- The weeks before and after Easter: mid-March through mid-April, or Spring Break Season
- The week before Christmas through the first couple of weeks of January, Christmas Day and New Years Eve bring in some of the largest crowds the park sees all year long.
- During June, most annual passholders are not blocked out yet
- If July 4th falls close to a weekend, then it will be extremely busy
- Check the Anaheim Convention Center website for large conferences. Busy in the late afternoon during these time periods.
Busy, But Not Overrun
- End of August through Labor Day
- The month of December, leading up to Christmas week
- Weekends throughout October and beginning of November while the theme parks are decorated for Halloween
- Labor Day through Thanksgiving, except avoid weekends
- Late January through February
- Late April unless Easter falls at that time
January through the beginning of May is what many call the off season. These weeks have the least amount of crowds, but a lot of the shows will not be running like the fireworks. This is important to consider in the debate of when to visit Disneyland.

Germany in particular looks absolutely beautiful at Christmas. You will really feel like youre at a Christmas market in Europe and forget for a moment that youre actually in Florida!

Disney World Crowd Calendar
Two things affecting Walt Disney World crowd levels are the events happening throughout the resort and school holidays. These are the two most important Walt Disney World crowd indicators. So, lets dive into the question: when is it going to be crowded at Disney World?
Most weekends will be busy no matter when you visit the resort. Disneyland has a larger influx of crowds on the weekend due to their large amount of annual passholders. While Disneyland is very much a park for the locals, Disney World seems to cater more towards tourists. Still, the locals love to take to the resort on the weekend.
Dont Miss The Fireworks Show
The Minnies Wonderful Christmastime Fireworks display for Disney Very Merriest After Hours is incredible. In fact, its one of my favorite fireworks shows Ive ever seen. Even if you arent going to stay awake for the whole party, dont leave before this show at 11:15 p.m. Id say if you cant stay up that late to enjoy the holiday-themed display, Id skip the party this year, as this was one of the biggest highlights of the night.
Because the crowd level at the after-hours party was so manageable, even on the sold-out night I attended, we were able to easily get a spot right in front of the castle just a few minutes before the show began. The show is virtually guaranteed to put you in a festive mood with holiday music, projections, fireworks and the best darn display that money can buy.

Peak Christmas Crowds Arrive At Disney World
Like clockwork, peak season crowds have arrived for the week of Christmas at Walt Disney World. Wait times are already up and are only likely to go higher as the parks see their heaviest attendance during the closing weeks of 2021. This report shares recent data, thoughts on whats likely to happen next with attendance this week, and why wait times dont tell the full storyor anywhere close to itof high holiday season feels like crowds in the parks.
Lets start with that last point, as it seems like a lot of people missed that in our wait times report from last week, which was somewhat-regrettably titled World. In todays era of only reading the headlines on social media, that didnt exactly play well with the Facebook commentariat. Despite the titles air quotes, many readers lambasted the report, saying their trips during the first half of December were the busiest theyve ever experienced at Walt Disney World.
The next couple paragraphs of that go on to explain how different demographics can impact the relationship between congestion and wait times, with a prime example being October 1 when Magic Kingdom was packed but had short lines. Im not going to rehash all of that because, presumably, if youve made it to the fourth paragraph of this post, youre actually reading beyond the headlines.
Lets turn to Walt Disney World wait times over the course of the last week
Above is a look at Magic Kingdom average daily wait times by attraction for the last week.
When Is Walt Disney World Least Crowded
If you are only going to Walt Disney World for the rides and general experience, and do not care so much about events going on in and near the park, you may want to stick to the times when it is the least busy.
Big crowds make for long lines. In that case, you do not need the whole Walt Disney World crowd calendar as much as someone who wants to know everything going on throughout the year. That is fine!
The rides are a great experience all by themselves! In order to get the most rides in with the shortest lines, you are going to want to come when the Disney World crowds are at their smallest.
Is it any surprise that Walt Disney World is at its least crowded state when all the kids go back to school? Disney crowds tend to be full of children, and things get so much better when the children are busy.
The last couple of weeks of August and basically all of September are a breeze at Walt Disney World.
Of course, we know the crowds at Disney World tend to be packed with adults as well, and you will basically never find a time when there is no line whatsoever, but you can definitely find much shorter lines in August and September.

Its The Busiest Time Of Year
The week between Christmas and the New Years at Walt Disney World Resort is not for first-time vacationers, those who think its just about the rides or those who do not like crowds. That being said, it can be a most wonderful time of the year if you plan ahead, know what to expect and come mentally prepared for the challenges.
For the past few years, Magic Kingdom park in particular has had to close its gates due to capacity crowds the week between Christmas and New Years. In addition, the Transportation and Ticket Center Parking lots that service the Magic Kingdom have, on occasion, reached capacity. Guests arriving at the toll plaza of the Magic Kingdom Park on such days are then directed to alternate parking at Epcot where they have the option to park and then use Resort transportation to return to Magic Kingdom. Parking at all of the monorail and Epcot area resorts is severely restricted beginning a few days prior to Christmas and continuing until after the New Year. High levels of traffic on New Years Eve night typically cause road closures and traffic pattern changes around property.
