Disney’s Star Wars: Rise Of The Resistance Ride Review
Editor’s note: This is a spoiler-free review of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, which opened at Disney World on December 5 and Disneyland on January 17. This review was originally published on December 4 after the ride’s Orlando opening – which is why it retains last year’s 9.5 score despite our recent review scale change – and we’ve since experienced the ride again at Disneyland for its Anaheim opening. Despite IGN being in the business of reviews for more than a decade, theme park ride reviews are still new for us – but we know that they’re of interest to a portion of our audience, especially when they’re based on franchises we care about. We want to offer an honest assessment of whether we believe a theme park attraction is worth your time, just as we do with games, movies, and TV shows, with the caveat that your own experience will undoubtedly be colored by what you enjoy most about theme park rides, so we encourage you to visit the park and experience it for yourself if you can, and share your thoughts on how we can make these reviews more useful to you in the comments! For more, be sure to read our review of the Galaxy’s Edge Disney ride Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, and watch our full ridethrough video for the Rise of the Resistance and the Rise of the Resistance queue. The new Marvel themed Avengers Campus also utilizes a Boarding Groups for the new WEB Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure attraction. Guests may only hold either the Spider-Man attraction or Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group at any one time. I made this visual graphic to help you plan out your day.

Be Prepared To Arrive Early To Ride Rise Of The Resistance
Cmon, runDisney fans, youve trained for this your whole life!
We are a special breed of Disney goers who know that you dont sleep in on vacation at Disney World. The early bird gets the best spots in the corrals and earns all the medals.
If you want to ride Rise of the Resistance, the early morning race experiences will serve you well.
Youll want to make sure you check the Hollywood Studios opening hours the day before you plan to hit up the attraction. Opening times can and do change frequently for this park right now, so make sure you are up to date by checking the My Disney Experience app.
You no longer need to arrive HOURS in advance. But Id still recommend arriving well before the park opens.
We arrived about 15 minutes before park opening and managed to walk straight through security and the turnstiles without any wait.

Its Not A Ride Its An Experience
In a time where IP-based coasters are the name of the game, the Imagineers flipped the script with Rise of the Resistance. There are no high-speed launches, no inversions, and no massive drops . At its most intense, Rise of the Resistance is a simulator a la Star Tours and throughout most of the ride time, its most akin to a dark ride.
So why is it so exciting? The thrill comes from the immersion. While guests are being recruited to the Resistance, experiencing a simulated flight into space, and then being led captive through a Star Destroyer, there are no seats. No restraints. Guests are free to walk around and look in whatever direction they choose. This is a 360-degree experience, and the guests are the stars of their own Star Wars adventure.
For the next phase of the attraction, guests board trackless ride vehicles and the immersion only continues as they move through multiple, massive sets complete with life-size AT-AT walkers, take on simulated blaster fire that leaves behind damage, and encounter fluid audio-animatronics and other ride effects all to the soundtrack of John Williams iconic score.
Unlike other attractions, its not the motion of the ride vehicle that creates the thrill. Its what youre experiencing. Thats why Rise of the Resistance isnt a ride its an experience.
Ways To Ride Rise Of The Resistance At Disneyland Without A Long Wait
If you are anything like us, you probably dont want to stand in a very long queue to ride this attraction, even if it is a ride that is more worth the wait! So what are your options for hacking your way to a shorter wait to ride Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland?
As is pretty obvious from the above details, you dont necessarily need to hack it at all. There is now a way simply to pay your way out of a long standby line for Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland with paid Lightning Lane at the expensive cost of $20 per person of course.
Just how fast do you need to book a paid Lightning Lane before they sell out for the day? Unlike at Walt Disney World where guests can start making bookings as early as 7am, guests at Disneyland can only make a purchase for the Rise of the Resistance Lightning Lane once they have scanned their ticket and actually entered a park each morning.
And also unlike at Walt Disney World, guests cannot choose any time for their Lightning Lane return time. The system at Disneyland works similar to Disney Genie+ where guests are offered only the next available return time.
The essentials you need to know to make a reservation in time are as follows:
Paying for individual Lightning Lane is a pricey proposition at $20 per person per ride! So is the cost ultimately worth it? The cost will simply be out of reach for many travelers, especially families who would need to purchase for 4, 5 or more people.

Experiencing Star Wars: Rise Of The Resistance For The First Time
We have reached the part of this review where I will walk you through the actual ride experience. At this point, you might want to keep reading or elect to visit some other blog posts on the site. But fair warning, youll be familiar with the ride in detail if you keep reading.
Due to offering a virtual queue, one would think that Rise of the Resistance might not have a long physical queue. However, the queue is quite lengthy and similar to what you would experience at any other headliner attraction. The first portion of the queue is outside and has a lot of landscaping.
The inside portion of the queue is cave-like as you approach the Resistance Headquarters. There you will be greeted by Rey from the most recent Star Wars series. She appears to guests in the form of a hologram and petitions for your help on the next Resistance mission.
BB-8 makes an appearance as well.
Youll also see a few other well-known characters.
The doors then open and you find yourself back outside boarding the latest Resistance fleet.
Inside your starship, youll be asked to hold on or lean on something to keep your balance. After takeoff, youll experience a bit of movement. This is a light simulated motion with minimal gravity loss. I dont think it would actually bother anyone, but you might not expect it.
Right now, guests are being assigned dots to stand on inside. I enjoyed standing at the back of the ship best so I could see what was happening around us.
Heres a look at the holding area.
How To Ride Star Wars: Rise Of The Resistance At Disneyland
Now lets head over to California to talk Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland. Disneyland also has finally unveiled Disney Genie+ and paid individual Lightning Lane to match Walt Disney World, so the systems are now more harmonized on both Disney coasts. Of course, there are some key differences between the resorts that guests need to know about.

Will This Ride Make Me Sick
This depends on what type of rides make you sick. There are many different ride systems throughout Rise of the Resistance, but none of them are overly fast or do jerky motions which you might normally think of getting sick from.
The main ride vehicle does slide through the hallways, turning the car in unexpected ways, but we never felt that it was overly fast and didnt make us sick at all. Its not like riding the Tea Cups for example.
Review Your Family & Friends List
Your Family & Friends List in your profile allows you to share plans and Disney Photo Pass photos with others. Connecting family members and friends here is the only way to get a Boarding Group with others you plan to ride with.
My Disney Experience auto-selects guests eligible for a Boarding Group in your Family & Friends List. An app update now allows you to confirm your party in advance one hour before the Virtual Queue opens, taking some of the stress out of the process. However, its a good idea to confirm the night before that everyone who wants to ride is in your Family & Friends List and has a Disneys Hollywood Studios Park Pass reservation.

Wait Times And Touring Strategy
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is an incredible attraction, but how long are those wait times and what type of touring strategy should you use to best see the ride?
Typically, there have been some very long wait times for new E-Ticket attraction openings in Walt Disney World recently.
Frozen Ever After, Flight of Passage, Slinky Dog Dash, and Smugglers Run all had wait times of 5+ hours on opening day, and most sustained high wait times months or more after.
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance has now been open for a while, but it has been one of the most unique attraction openings in Disney park history due to the Virtual Queue and the rides extreme popularity.
With the amount of hype this ride got before opening and the early success already, Rise of the Resistance has become a topic of controversy among fans.
Disney has chosen to employ its Virtual Queue system for Rise of the Resistance, and so far it has been extremely difficult to manage, to say the least.
In the first couple of weeks of operation, Disney was forced to open the park hours before the official opening time, and all boarding passes for Rise of the Resistance were sold out before 9 am.
Since then Disney has modified this plan multiple times, but boarding passes still sell out within seconds of opening up each day.
These changes have drastically modified any touring strategy you might have thought about using previously and have made keeping up with it an almost daily occurrence.
How Long Is The Wait Now With Standby Line
While wait times for Rise of the Resistance have been high, they havent been quite as bad as we originally thought, at least so far.
Since using the standby queue, the average wait times for Rise of the Resistance have been approximately 83 minutes at any given time during the day.
Considering the average wait time for all attractions in Hollywood Studios is only 36 minutes over the same span of time, Rise is easily the parks most popular ride and the number one priority for guests.
Of course, wait times for the ride are going to fluctuate greatly depending on many factors. What day you visit during the week, what time of day you get in line, and if you are there during peak season or a slower period of the year all can drastically change the wait times.
Average daily wait times during this time frame have been as low as 43 minutes on some days, and as high as 142 minutes on other days. Maximum wait times so far have reached as high as 366 minutes, but that is a rarity and not the norm.
This is all the more reason to consult our Disney World Crowd Calendar so you can find the least-busy times of the year to visit and not have to deal with waiting so long.
Were anxious to see how these wait times increase over the next few months as more and more guests start coming back to the parks. For the latest, you can check out thrill-data.com with a ton of graphs and charts explaining wait times.

What Characters Are In Rise Of The Resistance
One of the cool parts about Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance ride is that its full of your favorite characters from the actual Star Wars films. These are not voice doubles either, they got the actual same actors you see in the Star Wars films to reprise their roles for the ride.
Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac all make appearances.
The characters on Rise of the Resistance come in the form of animatronics, holograms, videos, and live actors.
Here is the list of characters that we know about so far that are in Rise of the Resistance:
- Over 50+ Stormtroopers
- Dozens of First Order Officers
If youre wondering who Vi Moradi is, shes the resistance spy hiding in Black Spire Outpost that the stormtroopers and Kylo Ren are always looking for. She has a role in the new Star Wars attraction and welcomes guests while warning them of the dangers that lie ahead.
I think this is a really cool idea to introduce a new character to the Star Wars universe through a ride and also have her walking around the land!
BB-8 and Rey play a big role in the pre-show for the ride, and Poe Dameron and Nien Nunb accompany you on your mission.
While up in the First Order star destroyer in Rise of the Resistance youll run into Kylo Ren and dozens of stormtroopers who will be chasing you and trying to stop you from escaping.
Finn also has a big in the ride and has a secret plan for you to escape.
Heres a look at the Kylo Ren animatronic that has been made for the ride:
Who Can Go On Rise Of The Resistance
With a relatively low height restriction of 40 inches , children as young as 4 might be tall enough to ride. That doesn’t necessarily mean they should. The same goes for tweens, teens, and adults. Sure, thrill rides are supposed to be thrilling but regardless of height or age, the thrills that Rise delivers may not be appealing to some people. That should be a personal decision.
Still, Rise is relatively mild when compared to many other park rides and attractions. Some roller coasters, of course, are incredibly extreme. While Disney World does not have any Six Flags-level coasters, it does offer some wild thrills that are considerably more intense than Rise.

Final Thoughts On Riding Star Wars: Rise Of The Resistance
Disney has done a really good job with Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. Fortunately, all guests have the opportunity to ride it now as well. Unless it breaks down. But it seems that most of those initial issues have worked themselves out for the most part.

The Rise Of The Resistance Queue And Storyline
Rise of the Resistance Entrance and Queue
The queue for the land works to immerse guests in the attraction. Rise of the Resistance blends in well with the forested area outside of Black Spire Outpost. Guests walk down a side path to reach the X-Wing and A-Wing waiting to launch before they see the actual entrance to the attraction. Once guests enter, there will be nothing visible from the 600 trees placed in this area of the land.
This queue features interactive elements that can be enjoyed with the Play Disney Parks app allowing guests to find holographic star maps. The Play Disney Parks app is a central piece to helping guests feel the reality of being in the interactive village of Black Spire Outpost in Batuu. The app allows guests to translate the language of Aurebesh, a galactic language in the Star Wars universe, and find hidden crates and containers, play in-queue games, message characters, and participate in land specific missions.
Rise of the Resistance Storyline- Spoilers!
These photos shows the path guests will take on the Star Destroyer on Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance as they join a battle between the First Order and the Resistance.
*Warning: ride spoilers ahead!
Things will appear to go well from first glance outside the high-tech monitor windows but soon you’ll be sucked inside a Star Destroyer.
Once you’re taken prisoner, you will see a full-sized TIE Fighter on your right and a 100-foot window that looks out into space.
