The Relationship Between Rides Lands And Parks

Fab 50 Golden Character Statues All Characters and Locations Walt Disney World

If a good theme park is a collection of stories, the interplay of narrative within a ride, narrative within a land, and narrative within a park is also important to understand. Luckily its also pretty simplethese things form a pyramid with a park at the top, lands in the middle, and rides at the bottom.

Theme parks and lands might be thought more like storybooks or collections of connected stories than individual stories. Those stories are connected by a theme. But the best storybook isn’t simply a collection of similarly-themed stories. The best storybook has a unified lesson, maybe even an arc or journey that it takes the reader on. The best theme parks collect stories into chapters , and connect those chapters into one overarching idea .

Focusing on rides / lands, lets contrast two neighboring rides in a very popular landSlinky Dog Dash and Toy Story Mania in Toy Story Land.

The theme of Hollywood Studios is something like hey you, youre in a movie now, but specifically Toy Story Land is meant to be Andys backyard. Youre transformed to the size of a toy, and youre hanging out with some of Andys toys. This all gets a bit muddled when Buzz greets guests in front of a Woody about 10X his height, but thats not the point here.

Slinky Dog Dash does an exquisite job telling the story of its land. The queue and ride design show you that Andy has combined his toy Slinky Dog with a Dash and Dodge Coaster kit. Its all simple, fine, but its detailed and well-done.

Walt Disney World Resort

While it is not a Disneyland® Resort, Walt Disney World® Resort is one of the most famous and popular Disney® Resort. It is located in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida, near Orlando. The resort opened on October 1, 1971 and is comprised of four theme parks including Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Disneys Hollywood Studios, two water parks, 27 themed resort hotels, nine non-Disney hotels, several golf courses, a camping resort, and much more.

Which Park Is The Best At Disney World

The best Disney park in Orlando to me is Epcot. If yourenew to ThemeParkHipster, then you may not understand why I value this themepark so much.

Not only is it innovative and educational, theres alwayssomething new for you to learn and enjoy by touring the countriesaround World Showcase.

If were going strictly off of pure popularity and classicDisney charm, then the Magic Kingdom is definitely the best Disney theme park inOrlando.

Disneyland Vs Disney World: Hotels

There are three Disney-owned hotels at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim: The Disney Hotel, Disneys Grand Californian Hotel and Spa, and Disneys Paradise Pier Hotel. Additionally, since Disneyland is smaller and closer to non-Disney hotels, there are a number of less expensive places to stay around the theme park.

Over at Disney World, there are over 35 different hotels and resorts ranging from the wallet-friendly Disneys Art of Animation Resort to the sleek safari-like Animal Kingdom Lodge, and the deluxe Disneys Polynesian Villas & Bungalows. In addition, there are nearly 45 Good Neighbor hotels that are within 15 miles of the parks. These hotels arent official Disney hotels, but they have partnered with Disney World to provide a more budget-friendly experience than staying on Disney property. The benefit to staying on property at Disney World is free and convenient transportation along with Extra Magic Hours early entry and extended hours at specific parks daily.

Disneyland Vs Disney World: Restaurants

USA West Coast Travel Part VI (Disneyland Resort, Anaheim ...

Because its the bigger theme park, Disney World also has more to offer in terms of restaurants and dining with nearly 400 restaurants and food stands. Gourmet restaurants include Cinderellas Royal Table, Le Cellier Steakhouse, and Topolinos TerraceFlavors of the Riviera.

The park in Anaheim is no slouch when it comes to dining either with more than 120 eateries. Blue Bayou, Carthay Circle, and Napa Rose are worth the trip!

Unfortunately, the park in Anaheim doesnt offer its guests dining plansunlike the park in Orlando, which includes various table and counter-service restaurants throughout the parks for additional savings. Meanwhile, both theme parks are home to an outlet of Disneys private members-only restaurant, Club 33. Check out some of the newestand most delicioustastes youll find at WDW.

      Theme Parks And Design Immersion

A theme park differs from an amusement park in that the former must show some commitment to a theme other than unbridled enjoyment . To be a good amusement park, a place needs a good attraction lineup, but a theme park specifically needs something more .

Theme can be present in different ways. One way, for example, is simply to name the lands and rides something keeping with the theme and add some minimal level of on-theme design to the attractions. All theme parks, including the Disney parks, do at least this.

Tokyo DisneySea offers ports named, for example, Mysterious Island, Lost River Delta, and American Waterfront. In the castle parks, Adventurelands around the world offer rides. Frontierlands are home to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Another way to bring theme into the park is in the design of the non-attraction elements, particularly the other details in the lands. Do the walkways, the stores, the open spaces, and the restaurants also fit the theme? This aspect of theme is most often referred to as the immersive quality of the park.

Disney excels at immersive design in its lands. For example, immersive design can be seen in Treasure Cove at Shanghai Disneyland, where the restaurants, shops, and walkways are designed to be reminiscent of a pirate-occupied Caribbean town.

The Disney park that we find best at immersive design is Tokyo DisneySea. Its themed ports radiate with detail, completely enveloping you once you set foot in them.

Disneyland Vs Disney World: Opening Day

The Disney theme park in Anaheim opened in 1955, while the Orlando theme park opened 16 years later in 1971. WDW benefited from Walt Disneys hindsight Disney hated that the area around Disneyland was overrun with other non-Disney hotels and theme parks, because he felt that it broke the illusion. To prevent this in Orlando, he bought a ton of land in Central Florida to have a bigger theme park to accommodate more guests. By comparison, the Disney theme park in Anaheim takes up about 510 acres of land, while the park in Orlando rests on about 30,000 acres.

Don’t Miss: What To Pack For Disney World

      Walt Disney Studios Park

Walt Disney Studios Park is the other park at Disneyland Paris. At its most basic, the park is an interpretation of Hollywood Studios. The park has two unique rides, Cars ROAD TRIP and Crushs Coaster.

The parks design completely misunderstands what makes a theme park tick. Some of the best design elements of Hollywood Studios were taken and stuffed into Disney Studio 1, an indoor boulevard of shops and restaurants, while much of the rest of the park is left bland and uninteresting.

The French-themed area with the Ratatouille ride is quite nice, but now that the ride and land design have been largely replicated in Epcots France pavilion it doesnt pack as much of a kick. Toy Story Playland feels a bit cramped with attractions that seem to be there only to give the park something of a ride count, and suffers from comparisons to Walt Disney Worlds Toy Story Land.

The park is the only true half-day park in the Disney portfolio.

The limited ride countunder ten isnt doing the park any favors, but at the same time this is about standard for parks other than the castle parks. The parks lack of popularity is something to behold, as even heavy hitting duplicates like Tower of Terror rarely have substantial waits.

Challenges To Ranking The Disney Parks

There are some real challenges to the task of ranking the Disney parks. First, its not like we went from one to another day after day. There were months between some visits and days between others.

Second, we had a limited time at each park. While we always err on the side of overstaying, theres no doubt it takes time to truly appreciate a good theme park. We don’t claim to be experts about every park.

Relatedly, we have vastly more experience at Walt Disney World and Disneyland than the other resorts. This helps some parks there that take time to really understand, while it hurts others that suffer from fatigue easily.

Finallyand what this post is really aboutthere is just the question of what makes a good theme park. It should go without saying that this list is subjective. But we’ve also tried to think it through and come up with some sort of support for our positions. Any good subjective ranking should maintain some consistency in the factors it’s considering.

When you get down to the actual rankings, youll maybe think it reads somewhat like a list we threw together like any other clickbait list . But that’s because we didn’t want to devote hundreds of words to each park, and it would be incredibly boring for people who just care about the list to have to hear us go on about the same things over and over.

      Walt Disney World Resort Florida

This was Walt Disneys biggest dream ever and in truth, has become Disneys biggest resort in the world. It sits on 25,000 acres of land in Orange County Florida.
