Disney World Fort Wilderness Cabins

The Cabins Showcase Floridas Natural Beauty

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campgrounds | Walt Disney World

Unlike any other Walt Disney World Resort, the Cabins at Disneys Fort Wilderness Resort put you in the middle of nature. Sure, its not nearly as wild as, say, the middle of the Grand Canyon or the Smoky Mountains, but consider this: The Walt Disney World Resort is perched on the edge of the historic headwaters of the Florida Everglades .

What does that mean? It means you will see some wonderful flora and fauna, including white-tailed deer, sweeping cypress trees, wild turkey, and towering longleaf pine treesall from your front porch or through your cabin window. Thats not something any other Walt Disney World Resort hotel can promise!

Want to learn more about Disneys relationship with the Everglades? Order our special Nature collectible issue of WDW Magazine, where I take you deep inside the Everglades and Disneys role in preserving this ecosystem.

Great Living in the Great OutdoorsWilderness Cabins, woodland dwellings in the heart of all the Walt Disney World® Resort magic, offer a quaint rustic vacation escape. These cozy six-person cabins are reminiscent of the log homes from pioneer days past, but with that special Disney touch. The interiors, sprinkled with richly-colored wilderness accents, offer a fully-equipped kitchen, full bathroom, air conditioning, daily housekeeping, TV, DVD player, dining room seating for six, plus an outdoor picnic table and grill. With vaulted ceilings and exposed beams, staying in a Wilderness Cabin is like having a little lodge just for your family. Attached to each cabin, out under the lush pine canopy, is a private deck for dining, playing, or simply savoring Mother Natures symphony.

You may bring your own equipment or rent tents for campsites amid 750 acres of cypress and pine woods and lush greenery, next to a sparkling lake. Recreation includes swimming pools, a sand beach, fitness and horse trails, boat and bicycle rentals, fishing, hay rides, camp fires and sing-alongs under the stars. Two trading post-themed shops provide grocery service and a variety of merchandise. The rousing Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue dinner show and other dining options are located in Pioneer Hall.

Disney Fort Wilderness Resort During Covid

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned life around the world, and at Walt Disney World, upside down. The safety of guests and cast members is Disneys number one priority. So, a number of changes have been put in place to help keep everyone as healthy as possible including increased housekeeping measures across property, social distancing guidelines, and the temporary alteration or cancelation of things like character dining and backstage tours. Even with these changes, we think Disney is still just as fun and magical as ever.

Fortunately, with most of the resort being outside, much of Fort Wilderness remains open or is operating but in some altered form. The only amenities currently unavailable are marina rentals, Daniel Boones and Davy Crocketts Wilderness Arcades, the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue, and Chip n Dales Campfire Sing-A-Long.

There are also some general guest amenities that have been suspended or are operating at a reduced capacity throughout Disney World. However, were hopeful that these will return to normal, or in an altered capacity, as the world returns to normal. They are:

  • Disneys Magical Express
  • Package delivery
  • Airline check-in service

Other Recreation At Disneys Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground

Ft. Wilderness Cabins

The only Disney World campground, Fort Wilderness is a massive resort with the most amenities of any other resort on property. As a result of its location and sheer size, there are tons of outdoor activities to be had here, making it one of our favorite hotels to do some resort hopping even if you arent spending the night.

Kids staying at Fort Wilderness will love Chip n Dales Campfire Sing-A-Long, Movies Under the Stars, pony rides, playgrounds, and Daniel Boones and Davy Crocketts Wilderness Arcades. Meanwhile, adults might enjoy getting in a workout on the jogging trail, showing their skills on the basketball or beach volleyball courts, or exploring the backwoods of Disney World by Segway on the Wilderness Back Trail Adventure.

And the fun doesnt stop there. Fort Wilderness is filled with activities for the whole family like the Fort Wilderness Archery Experience, horse-drawn carriage and wagon rides, and fishing excursions. You can even rent a bike, kayak, canoe, or motorized boat to discover Fort Wildernesss watery highways and earthly byways. And whatever you do, you wont want to miss the Tri-Circle-D Ranch. Not only is this where the horses of Fort Wilderness live, but its also where Cinderellas Ponies and the trusty steeds of Main Street call home. In short, theres no shortage of things to do at Disney Worlds Fort Wilderness Resort.

Cabin Theming Takes You To The Mountains

Of course, Disney being Disney doesnt leave all the theming to nature! The Walt Disney World Company has tricked out the cabins at Disneys Fort Wilderness Resort with all the rustic theming youd expect from a cabin along the Appalachian Range.

That means wood paneling inside, bentwood chairs, and other mountain cabin touches.

Our Opinion Of Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort

We’re divided in our opinions of Fort Wilderness – Steve is NOT a fan. He feels that camping should be camping but a Disney World vacation should be a Disney World vacation centered around the theme parks. He really doesn’t like the extra transportation time required by the internal bus system. On the other side of the fence is Annette who LOVES the campground because it feels real in the midst of the largely artificial aspects of the Disney World. There is no doubt that there is a lot to do at the campground and that it has been a popular choice since Disney World opened in 1971. If you want to hit the ground running early and spend most of your time at the theme parks, you’ll probably be happier at a traditional hotel. If you are looking for a vacation experience that includes theme parks but also includes quieter family activities and some down time, you may find that Fort Wilderness is a perfect fit.

Boat To Magic Kingdom And Wilderness Lodge

Weather dependent, there is also boat transportation from Fort Wilderness to the Magic Kingdom or Disneys Wilderness Lodge. Walk, bike, drive a golf cart or take a shuttle bus to the marina in the Settlement area for the boats. The GREEN boat is the one that goes to/from Fort Wilderness to the Magic Kingdom, so if you are ending your day and you get on a different color boat, you wont initially get back to your camp.

Internal Transport At Disneys Fort Wilderness Resort

The resort is serviced by an internal shuttle service operated using Disney Transport buses. Three bus linespurple, orange, and yellowrun roughly every ten minutes between Outpost and Settlement, each taking a slightly different route. Youll need to tell the bus driver your stop .

Stops are frequent and put you within a five minute walk to any accommodation. A ride with no stops from one end to the other takes something like seven minutes. If youre trying to get to Outpost or Settlement, just take whichever bus comes first. Otherwise, be sure to consult a map to see which route you need to take.

It didnt occur to me to mention this, but Emily pointed out that unlike most Disney buses, the Fort Wilderness shuttles operate on both sides of the road, except at the endpoints. So youll want to get on the one on the side of the road that matches the direction youre going. To that end, youll usually see a covered stand on one side and a bench on the other.

Besides the bus service, you can get around Fort Wilderness a few different ways. You can walk everywhere, with Outpost to Settlement taking 25 to 30 minutes at an average walking pace.

You can use bicycles, including by renting one from Disney for $20 per day. You can also use golf carts, including by renting one from Disney for $59 per day. Golf cart and bicycle parking are widely available throughout the resort.

Disney also has a handy guide to what types of personal transport are permitted.
