Difference Between Disneyland And Disney World

Key Differences Between Disneyland And Disney World

10 Biggest Differences between Disneyland & Disney World
  • Walt Disney died five years before the grand opening of Disney World in 1971, unlike Disneyland which was built under his direct supervision.
  • Disney World stretches 43 square miles, while Disneyland only covers approximately 500 acres.
  • The Pirates of the Caribbean ride is seven minutes longer at Disneyland, clocking in at more than fifteen minutes.

Disneyland is known as the happiest place on earth, while its counterpart Disney World is known as the most magical. But what marks this difference between the two? Do they not offer the same enchanted experience? Even though both parks are often inseparable in the minds of fans, they are quite unique from each other in many ways. Below is a guide to help understand the main differences between Disneyland and Disney World.

The Rich History Of Disneyland

Walt Disneyopened Disneyland on July 17th, 1955 Walt Disney World wasnt opened until October 1st, 1971 . However, Disneyland has changed significantly since its opening day, like adding New Orleans Square , Mickeys Toontown , and Downtown Disney.

Abraham Lincoln was a subject of great interest to Walt Disney. The first Audio-Animatronics version of Mr. Lincoln appeared at the New York Worlds Fair in 1964, and it was so realistic that National Geographic magazine referred to it as alarming. The show now lives at Disneyland Park, where it has been since 1965. Not sure how that show would compare to the future world we have today!

Both resorts are somewhat different from each other these days due to age and size differences. On the one hand, I think Disneyland is a lot more magical than Walt Disney World simply because everything feels smaller in size and intimate when youre there.

The Magic Kingdom opened on July 17, 1955, and was created and supervised by Walt Disney himself. Some of the original 1955 rides are still in operation today, including Autopia, the Disneyland Railroad, Jungle Cruise, Snow Whites Scary Adventures, Storybook Land Canal Boats, and others.

However, if you like big theme parks like Universal Orlando Theme Parks or Busch Gardens Williamsburg, or Lake Buena Vista Resort, Walt Disney World is a better option for you. Its the worlds largest theme park resort, and it has more attractions than all of Disneyland Resort combined!

Disneyland Vs Disney World: Comparing The Location

Disneyland sits in Anaheim, CA. The property started as 160 acres and later expanded to 500 acres. Disney World is near the Orlando area, in the town of Lake Buena Vista, a town owned by the Disney company. It covers 27,000 acres, meaning you could fit 51 Disneylands inside of it.

One of the most significant advantages of the Disneyland location is the weather. Its not too hot in summer or too cold in the winter. The average rainfall is low. Your vacation is always likely to be comfortable. Disney World has nice weather during the winter and early spring, but its swelteringly hot the rest of the year.

Because of its sheer size, Disney World can give visitors a truly immersive experience. From the moment you drive through the gates, youre right in the middle of the total Disney experience and cut off from the outside world.

Different Nighttime Shows Including Fireworks

Both resorts have a variety of nighttime entertainment that cant be found anywhere else. However, I still feel that Walt Disney World has the better shows. For example, the show at Disneyland Paris is cute but short and doesnt compare to IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth or Fantasmic!

Walt Disney World also has Rivers of Light, a nighttime show with music and animal images projected on water screens. Meanwhile, Disneylands Paint the Night Parade features more glowing floats than its Main Street Electrical Parade counterpart but without classic characters like Tinker Bell flying over Sleeping Beauty Castle. The truth is, any resort worth its salt must offer some nighttime entertainment . So while I love the shows and parades at both resorts, I also think theres a better nighttime show experience waiting for you at Walt Disney World.

Rides Unique To Disney World

Main Differences Between Disney World and Disneyland ...

Disney World is made up of four parks vs. the two parks that makeup Disneyland. As a result, many rides and attractions are unique to Disney World.

Magic Kingdom Rides

Many of the rides are the same between Magic Kingdom and Disneyland, but there are several rides that you can only find in the Magic Kingdom. Two of the parks newest rides, the Seven Dwarves Mine Train and Under the Sea: Voyage of the Little Mermaid, are unique.

You can also find a few classic rides and attractions, like the Carousel of Progress and Country Bear Jamboree.

Epcot Rides

Almost all of the rides and attractions in Epcot are unique to the park. You can find dark rides like Spaceship Earth and The Seas With Nemo and Friends. If youre looking for thrills, theres Mission: Space, Soarin Around the World, and Test Track. The new ride, Frozen Ever After, based on the hit film, is also trendy.

Epcot is also home to The World Showcase, where you can experience different countries and cultures. There are many unique experiences in this area, like special character meet-and-greets and educational shows.

Epcot will soon be home to exciting new attractions, like Remys Ratatouille Adventure and the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind rollercoaster. This coaster will be the first Marvel ride in Florida.

Hollywood Studios Rides

Animal Kingdom Rides

For fans of the Avatar film, Disney recently opened a new land, Pandora, with two new rides: Avatar Flight of Passage and Navi River Journey.

Tomorrowland In Magic Kingdom Vs Disneyland

When it comes to Tomorrowland, I feel like Disneyland is better than the Magic Kingdom for fun experiences. Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom does have the People Mover, which I always loved in Disneyland and is no longer there, so thats a great thing at Disney World, but thats where its winning stops.

Tomorrowland in Disneyland is way better than in the Magic Kingdom for now. Disneyland has a way better version of Space Mountain, its got Star Tours: the Adventures Continue, Star Wars Launch Bay, a Monorail stop AND the best cream cheese pretzels ever. Yes, Space Mountain in Disneyland is very different from Magic Kingdom, including having an awesome music track. And the Star Wars stuff!!!

We love Star Wars: Galaxys Edge, but when it comes to the best Star Wars fan stuff outside of Batuu, Tomorrowland in Disneyland takes the cake. Star Tours, the Star Wars Launch Bay, the Star Trader and, maybe returning someday, the Jedi Training Academy. For a Star Wars fan, on a day when Galaxys Edge is busy, spending time in Tomorrowland in Disneyland is a great idea. And this is why we like Tomorrowland in Disneyland more than in the Magic Kingdom.

Note: the TRON Lightcycle rollercoaster will be opening in the Magic Kingdoms Tomorrowland in 2022/23 and thats going to be huge. Going 59 MPH and riding a lightcycle, its going to give the land a boost for sure!

Disneyland Vs Disney World: Comparing The Castles

While many people think the castles in Disneyland and Disney World are the same, there are quite a few differences. Disneyland is home to Sleeping Beautys castle, while Cinderellas castle is in Disney World.

Cinderellas castle is much larger than Sleeping Beautys and has a restaurant, a suite, and Bippity Boppity Boutique. Sleeping Beautys castle has a working drawbridge and has real gold on its exterior.

Cinderellas castle is the only one with a stage often used for exciting shows featuring characters, music, and dancing.

Rides Unique To Disneyland

There are some rides you can only experience at Disneyland. Many of these rides are fan favorites that bring back a sense of nostalgia for the park in its early days. For example, Mr. Toads Wild Ride is one of Disneylands most beloved rides. You can also find Roger Rabbits Car Toon Spin and the Matterhorn Bobsleds.

Disneyland and the California Adventure Park have some new rides that you wont find at Disney World. There are some fun Pixar-based rides, like the Incredicoaster & Monsters Inc., Mike, and Sully to the Rescue!

California Adventure also has an entire section dedicated to the Cars films with three exciting rides: Radiator Springs Racers, Maters Junkyard Jamboree, and Luigis Rollickin Roadsters.

A Note on Marvel Rides at Disneyland

If youre a Marvel fan, Disneyland is the destination for you. You can visit Avengers Campus, where you can attend the stage show Doctor Strange: Journey Into the Mystic Arts or take a free fall on Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: Breakout! .

You can also try out Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure, the newest ride at Avengers Campus. Guests get to imagine themselves as Spidey in this interactive ride.

While theres room for Avengers Campus to grow at Disneyland, there probably wont be many Marvel rides at Disney World. When Disney purchased the Marvel franchise, they agreed not to use any Marvel characters featured on Universal Studioss Super Hero Island east of the Mississippi River.

Disneyland Vs Disney World Rides & Entertainment

Disney World vs Disneyland – Which One Is Best For YOU?

The Disneyland Resort has two parks and Walt Disney World has four, and each of those six theme parks is unique and magical. Obviously, there is more to do overall at Disney World, but that does not mean there is any shortage of fun to be had at Disneyland.

In fact, some people are surprised to learn that there are more rides per park in California. And, although they are not always in the same park/land or provide the exact same experience, Disneyland and Disney World share many of the same rides. Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones and the new Star Wars Galaxys Edge are a few examples.

There are also some fantastic rides, entertainment and experiences you can only have in one place. For example, Pandora Flight of Passage, Kilimanjaro Safaris and Expedition Everest are 100% unique to Animal Kingdom at Disney World, while you wont find Disney California Adventures Radiator Springs Racers and Cars Land anywhere else but on the west coast. Disney California Adventure park is also home to the new Avengers Campus.

Both Disney parks have a variety of shows and entertainment. While both have parades, nightly fireworks and shows like Fantasmic, each park has a variety of popular shows unique to their location. Keep in mind Disney World has twice the number of parks, so by default will have many more options to choose from.

Disneyland Vs Disney World: Restaurants

Because its the bigger theme park, Disney World also has more to offer in terms of restaurants and dining with nearly 400 restaurants and food stands. Gourmet restaurants include Cinderellas Royal Table, Le Cellier Steakhouse, and Topolinos TerraceFlavors of the Riviera.

The park in Anaheim is no slouch when it comes to dining either with more than 120 eateries. Blue Bayou, Carthay Circle, and Napa Rose are worth the trip!

Unfortunately, the park in Anaheim doesnt offer its guests dining plansunlike the park in Orlando, which includes various table and counter-service restaurants throughout the parks for additional savings. Meanwhile, both theme parks are home to an outlet of Disneys private members-only restaurant, Club 33. Check out some of the newestand most delicioustastes youll find at WDW.

Disneyland Vs Disney World In Summary: Whats Different

While many people think that Disneyland and Disney World are virtually the same, there are many differences between the two parks. Disney World is much larger and comprises of four theme parks, two water parks, and several resorts.

Each park has attractions and cuisine that are unique to the park. Each park also has its own atmosphere and set of fans. Disneyland attracts people going for a nostalgic, retro vibe, while Disney World offers the whole immersive experience for those looking for an escape to something magical.

Disneyland Vs Disney World: Cost

Disneyland and Disney World both use dynamic pricing for theme park tickets. That means that ticket prices vary depending on the season, day of the week, and other factors. Theme park tickets at both resorts are pricey. Expect to pay over $100 for a one-day, one-park ticket, but exact prices will depend on your vacation dates and whether or not you splurge for Park Hopper to visit more than one park per day.

That said, there are plenty of ways to save money on a Disney World or Disneyland vacation.

Disney World V Disneyland Dining

Disneyland vs. Walt Disney World

Like everything else, Disneyworld v Disneyland dining is a hard comparison. Both Disney Parks have great dining options but Disney World has more offerings to choose from because of size.

First off, in terms of Disney dining both Disney World and Disneyland use their respective apps and websites to schedule dining reservations. Both Disney World and Disneyland dining reservations can be booked 60 days in advance right now.

At Disney World, dining reservations need to be made 60 days in advance because many places fill up. But at Disneyland, you have a much better chance at getting a last minute dining reservation.

Disneyland has more locals than Disney World so you dont need to plan as far in advance.

Now Disney World certainly has more table service restaurants but this is likely because there are so many more Disney World resorts.

But this doesnt mean youll go hungry because Disneyland has fewer table service restaurants. The Disneyland table service restaurants are amazing and the Disneyland quick service restaurants are always delicious too.

Disney World v Disneyland dining at Disney Springs or Downtown Disney is a great option too. Both Disney Springs and Downtown Disney have lots of table service restaurants. And some dont require reservations at all!

Both Disneyworld and Disneyland Parks have so many delicious dining options to choose from so you certainly wont go hungry. But for the larger selection of restaurants, Disney World takes the cake again!

Same Rides But Different Magical Experiences

The rides at both resorts are different in many ways. For example, Splash Mountain is a log flume ride with a steep drop and animatronics that makes it different from Disneylands Grizzly River Run white-water rafting experience. Even mr. toads wild ride is a pretty crazy ride at Disneylands Park, as you go in and out of the lavish English manor house known as Toad Hall.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has broken tracks and an unpredictable mine train, while Thunder Mountain Railroad is a traditional roller coaster like the Matterhorn Bobsleds.

If you think about it, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Splash Mountain have way more differences than similarities, so I still feel theres enough of a difference to say that theyre not the same.

Disneyland Vs Disney World: Transportation

Transportation around Disneyland is essentially a non-issue due to its smaller size. However, the park does offer free shuttle services to and from the parking lot. There is also a Disneyland monorail that travels between Tomorrowland in Disneyland Park and Downtown Disney.

But, the need for transportation is extremely apparent at Disney World. Thankfully, the park fully takes care of its guests with a complimentary transportation system that can get them to wherever they need to be. That includes buses, a ferry, gondolas, or the monorail, which runs between two theme parks and three Disney-operated hotels.

Disneyland Vs Disney World: On Property Bonuses

Even though Disney World has four theme parks and over 25 resorts, there is still a lot of space to take up in that 40+ square miles. Which means Disney World has a lot more to enjoy on property beyond the parks.

There are two water parks at Disney World Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, both of which you can easily spend an entire day enjoying.

Another popular spot at Disney World is Disney Springs, a shopping and restaurant area with some super popular spots. Heres where you can find some of the best food on property , plus upscale shopping, entertainment like live music and bowling, and those famous Gideons cookies.

Walt Disney World also has multiple golf courses and putt-putt golf courses, if you need even more to do on your vacation!

Disneyland on the other hand, doesnt have nearly as much to offer. There is Downtown Disney, which is comparable to Disney Springs, with dining, shopping, and entertainment. But beyond this area, there isnt a lot to do outside of the theme parks at Disneyland.

Disneyland Vs Disneyworld Transportation

Disneyland vs Disney World

And last but not least, we take a look at Disneyworld v Disneyland transportation differences. This is one of the areas with the biggest Disney World v Disneyland difference.

Walt Disney World has an extremely robust transportation system. TheDisney World transportation systemconsists of boats, buses, skyliners, and monorails.

At Disney World, every Disney resort has bus transportation to the Disney Parks and Disney Springs. Many of the Disney World deluxe resorts have additional transportation options like the monorail or boat.

In the last few years, Disney opened theDisney World Skyliner transportation systemso guests from Value, Moderate and Deluxe resorts can take the Skyliner to the Disney Parks.

All of this combined together has created a very complex Disney World transportation system. While Disneyland doesnt have much of a transportation system at all.

All three of the Disneyland resorts are within walking distance to both Disneyland parks. The only form of transportation at Disneyland is the monorail.

The Disneyland monorail transports guests from Disneyland to Downtown Disney and back.

Comparing Disneyland v Disney World transportation shows a big difference. Its certainly easier to get around at Disneyland so keep that in mind while deciding if you want to visit Disney World or Disneyland.
