Camping Near Disney World Orlando

We Love Fort Wilderness

KOA Holiday Near Walt Disney World

I have fond memories of camping at Disneys Fort Wilderness Campground as a child, and have enjoyed going back several times now with my own kids! Weve stayed at almost every other Disney value and moderate resort. We have visited every Disney hotel on property, toured the grounds and eaten at their unique restaurants. We are huge Disney resort fans. From the service you receive, the themed rooms and fun kids activities, free transportation and easy access to the parks, weve really never had a bad experience. No other campground puts you just minutes away from the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Disney Springs.

Fort Wilderness Campground is part of the value class of resorts right on Walt Disney World property in Orlando, Florida. You get many of the same magical benefits you would at the other Disney resorts. These benefits include close proximity to the parks, Magic Bands at a discounted rate, free Disney transportation and more! The campground can be a great option for people that love to camp, prefer to be out in nature over a hotel, or have a large family that has outgrown standard rooms.

With all that being said, even though its called a Resort and CampgroundFort Wilderness is really a campground, and its important to remember that. Its not a hotel.

Lake Kissimmee State Park

Lake Kissimmee State Park provides a beautiful, natural Florida setting to camp in. The campsites are all surrounded by oak trees, providing shade and privacy for your RV. The campsites are arranged in two loops. Both loops have bathrooms and showers located in the center. Sandy trails lead from the loop road into the bathrooms.

The campsites at this state park can accommodate rigs up to 55 ft long, so its definitely big rig friendly. All developed campsites have water and electric hookups. If youre planning on adding a little outdoor activity to your Disney trip, you can hikethere are 13 miles of hiking trailsor you can paddle any of the three lakes in the park.

Experienced paddlers can try the Buster Island Paddling Trail . The park also offers a lookout tower with views of Lake Kissimmee. From October 1 to May 1, the park has an 1876 cow camp with living history demonstrations.

At 51 miles from Disney World, expect your commute into Disney to be about an hour. This makes Lake Kissimmee State Park most ideal if youre looking to visit just one of the Disney Theme Parks for one day and enjoy Floridas nature the rest of your stay.

What Age Is It Best For

We have stayed at Fort Wilderness while our kids were 5, 7 and 9, and have gone back later with a 2 year old and a 13 year old. At times, we have visited with grandparents and cousins of all ages. We ALL had a great time and Disney truly has thought of something for every age.

The pool area is so well equipped for the toddler years and my 5, 7 and 9 year old all loved the water slide. They loved that they could stand in line and go down it all by themselves. You might think the pool would be less appealing to teens as it is only 3 feet deep and full of young kids, but my teens have never complained. Teenagers will enjoy the horseback riding, boating, fishing and other outdoor activities, but if theyre hoping for an impressive arcade area they will be disappointed.

Dont Feed The Wildlife

We noticed the first day we got there that the squirrels were exceptionally friendly . Too many Disney princesses have called the woodland animals in and fed them from their campsites. Believe me when I say, no food is safe. See the below picture for proof of what they are capable of! The nice thing is, I called this in to report it and a very nice maintenance/pest control man came out to take a look and they refunded us money for the damages.

Manatee Hammock County Park: Near Kennedy Space Center

1 hour to Disney via expressway

This 27-acre RV and tent campground on the Indian River Lagoon is shady but often crowded because its just a short hop to the Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral National Seashore and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

And thats exactly why you might like it.

Ive camped at this park a few times and love the location and the price, just $26 a night. Theres plenty of shade, and while the sites are close together, they still beat the bumper-to-bumper spacing in many private campgrounds.

The shoreline park offers a 197-foot fishing pier into the Indian River Lagoon, a playground and a great view of Kennedy Space Center rocket launches. A kayak launch also provides access to the lagoon for paddlers.

The parks swimming pool is a great summer escape.

Pets are allowed, and theres even a leash-free zone for fido to play.

Surfing mecca Cocoa Beach is just down the road a piece, and your kids will go crazy shopping at Ron Jons Surf Shop at any time, day or night.

Other than the Kennedy Space Center, one advantage this campground has over the others on this list is its proximity to many great restaurants at nearby Port Canaveral and historic Cocoa Village.

While youre here, you may well decide you havent had enough of the Mouse, so go for a cruise aboard a Disney-themed cruise ship from nearby Port Canaveral.

Wekiwa Springs State Park

If you want to take in Walt Disney World but also view some incredible nature, then the crystal blue waters and diverse landscape filled with abundant wildlife at Wekiwa Springs State Park, one of the best state parks near Orlando, is an ideal match. You can explore the many miles of trail here by bike or foot, but horseback riding is also an option.

Guests can rent kayaks and canoes on-site to explore the water, see the spring vent, and get a closer look at the unique plant life. The water here hovers around 72-degrees all year round, and the shoreline is perfect for picnics and relaxing at any time of day.

This state park is just 16 miles from downtown Orlando and 30 miles from some of the biggest tourist attractions in the state. Hiking the parks 25+ miles of trail is another loved activity, and guests can choose from quick treks or any length to full-day hikes.

Why Youll Love Bill Frederick Park At Turkey Lake

Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground 2013 Tour and ...

A highly demanded feature of Bill Frederick Park is disc golf. Fortunately for lovers of this sport, the grounds have three courses. The path that follows the lakes perimeter is usually packed with walkers, joggers, and bikers. If you have small children, youll enjoy taking them to the small farm zoo and watching them run around on the playground.

KOA RV Park in Orlando Near Disney

If you plan to be at Disney World for several nights, then the price might seem a little steep for you. Luckily, there are several sites available in the nearby Kissimmee or Orlando areas. These sites will have all the amenities you need and are only a short drive to not only Disney World but Universal Studios and Legoland as well. By choosing a site outside of the resort, you will not only save on nightly rates but also be able to save money on dining and shop for necessities.

Parks outside the resort tend to be less busy, so youre better able to enjoy quiet nights after long days. It also a better way to restock on supplies, skirt around resort traffic, and enjoy the other activities built in Central Florida. If you want to stay out of the fray of Disney World itself, staying outside the park can be an excellent way to give your family a taste of everything Florida has to offer, not just Disney World.

Is A Thousand Trails Membership Worth It

To answer the question, you have to figure out how many nights youre going to use the membership in one year and how many campgrounds you plan to visit. The most basic Thousand Trails membership is 1 zone camping pass for $575/year.

Thousand Trails Orlando is in the Southeast Zone which has 24 campgrounds. Using this zone as an example, if you buy a Southeast Zone pass, you will receive 30 nights of camping which comes out to $19.17/night. There are some restrictions so be sure to do your research before you buy.

Is $19.17/night for a full hook-up site at any of the 24 campgrounds in the Southeast Zone for 30 nights a year worth it to you? If youre answer is yes, then you may want to consider a Thousand Trails Membership.

Campsites Near Disney World

Walt Disney World Resort in Florida is one of the most-popular family destinations in the United States, welcoming tens of millions of people annually. As such, average accommodations near the resort can run hundreds of dollars per night. In addition to the admission, food and souvenirs at the park, this can make a Disney World vacation unobtainable. Campsites are a significantly cheaper alternative to resort hotel rooms.

If You Are Not Familiar With Disney You May Be Wondering About The Benefits Of Staying On

    1. Starting 180 days from your arrival date, you can make Advance Dining Reservations for your arrival date, as well as the rest of your stay. Non-Disney resort guests can only make a reservation 180 days in advance, so they miss out on the expanded reservation window and have to arrange reservations for additional days of their trip by contacting Disney when each of the other desired dates reach the 180-day window. Appointments for the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique have this same perk.

    2. Starting 60 days from your arrival date, you can start making FastPass+ reservations for your entire trip. Non-resort guests are limited to 30 days from each date they plan to visit.

If you are interested in making reservations at the most popular dining spots or obtaining a FastPass+ for the most popular attractions, the expanded reservation window for resort guests is a huge advantage. Without this perk, I would likely not have been able to make an early morning breakfast reservation at Cinderellas Royal Table or a FastPass+ time for five of us to ride Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

    3. Each day, one or sometimes two of the parks have Extra Magic Hours in the morning or the evening . These Extra Magic Hours are outside of the regular park hours and are only available to Disney World Resort hotel guests.

    4. Disney provides complimentary transportation from Fort Wilderness to destinations all across Walt Disney World property.
