[4K] Big Thunder Mountain Coaster – Magic Kingdom – Walt Disney World

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom was closed this week for a scheduled refurbishment. And it reopened to guests today on schedule.

We headed on over to the wildest ride in the wilderness to see if we could notice any changes.

The walls and signs that were up during the refurbishment are now down.

Like us, guests were excited to ride one of the best attractions again, as the queue was mainly full.

Can you spot Cinderella Castle?

As happy as we are to see Big Thunder Mountain Railroad open again, we didnt see any noticeable changes after the refurbishment.

Seven Fun Facts About Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

by David Mumpower·June 6, 2021

When you think about classic Disney roller coasters, your mind likely goes to Space Mountain first.

For Disneyland fans, Matterhorn Bobsleds should pop in your head as well.

However, my pick for the best roller coaster from the early days of Disney theme parks takes place in the Wild West, not outer space or the Swiss Alps.

Here are seven fun facts about Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the wildest ride in the wilderness!

Overview Of Big Thunder Mountain

Considered mild compared to some of the other roller coasters at Disney, this one still gives thrills. This may be a good one to start with if youre uncertain about how youll handle a roller coaster.

Its themed after a runaway mine train rushing through an Old West mining town and also through the mine itself. Speeds reach 30-35 miles per hour over rough tracks. There are sharp turns, plunges, intense curves and short stops. The plunges are not anywhere as high and deep as some of the major coasters, but youll still feel them. You will not turn upside down at any time. The curves are banked steeply enough to have you almost sideways, so people with neck, pain or weakness issues should take note. The steep banking does minimize the G-forces.

More Information On The Ride

The ride was renovated in the year 2014. The entire rail tracks were taken off and replaced. The ride vehicles were also replaced, and some new scenes and details were added for ride enjoyment.

Service animals cannot be on this ride. The ride is wheelchair accessible. However, one needs to transfer from their wheelchair to ride.

To board the ride, guests must be healthy. They should not be suffering from conditions such as back, neck, or heart problems, motion sickness, high blood pressure, or any other conditions that can worsen due to this ride.

A ride swap is available for this ride. The criteria for big thunder mountain railroad height is 40 inches or taller.

This ride does not have as long queues as some of the other Magic Kingdom rides like Peter Pans Flight, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and Space Mountain.

Therefore taking a Fastpass for this ride is not advisable even though the ride offers it. However, if you wish to opt for a FastPass for this ride, make sure you make reservations for it at the earliest. Getting a FastPass for the ride is very easy and does not require you to wait long.

Bad weather affects the ride as it is an outdoor attraction. In extreme weather conditions, the ride is shut down to protect its guests from any unforeseen occurrences. The queue for the ride is outdoors, and there is no protection from the rain.

Facts And Secrets About Big Thunder Mountain In Disneys Magic Kingdom

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Walt Disney World and Disneyland ...

Big Thunder Mountain is definitely the most rootinest, tootinest ride found in all of Walt Disney World. The attraction lives in Frontierland at the Magic Kingdom. During the ride, you take off in a train on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad through the mine with many incredible thrills and surprises along the way. The ride also holds various hidden secrets and extras that you may not have noticed, even if you have ridden the ride several times. Here are ten facts and secrets you may not know about Big Thunder Mountain:

10 Big Thunder Mountain isnt actually just made of rock.

It might look like a huge rock mountain, but there is so much more than makes up the structure and foundation for the rock mountain. Big Thunder Mountain was actually created with 6,500 tons of steel, 90,000 gallons of water, 4,675 tons of the mud that was created to coat the structure, and 4,000 gallons of paint that gives it the brownish, orange color that we see today with perfect details in the painting job.

Each Theme Parks Backstory Is Different

On virtually all Disney attractions around the world, the backstory is the same.

The rides themselves may vary to give each park a unique version. In fact, as well discuss, thats true of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad as well.

However, few attractions come with unique stories depending on the park. When they do, these rides usually include different names like Phantom Manor.

With Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Disney adopted a different approach.

The general premise remains the same. A small town discovers gold, only for tragedy to befall it, leaving an abandoned mining facility.

The rest varies by park. At Magic Kingdom, a flash flood has wiped out a place called Tumbleweed.

The Disneyland city is named Rainbow Ridge, which collapses after a massive earthquake. And Tokyo Disneylands version experiences a tsunami.

These variations on the same premise introduce a bit of mystery as each natural disaster has emptied out a formerly thriving mining community.

One Of The Artificial Magic Kingdom Mountains

When Magic Kingdom opened in 1971, it hosted a total of zero artificial mountains. All four of them came later.

Space Mountain debuted in 1975, followed by Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in 1980 and finally Splash Mountain in 1992.

The most recent addition is Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, which some people dont even include.

The artificial mountains at Magic Kingdom dominate the landscape, providing the type of visual splendor that Walt Disney coveted.

Among them, Space Mountain is undoubtedly the most memorable, but Big Thunder Mountain Railroads charm stems from its rustic style.

Youll understand the general premise of the ride just from looking at the artificial mountain. Speaking of which

Mango’s Tropical Cafe on International Drive has become an honorary member of Orlando Police Department’s “Safe Place” program, even though it lies outside city limits.

Orlando kicked off the program in December, issuing rainbow decals in the shape of a badge for businesses that want them.

“This location is a SAFE PLACE for victims of anti-LGBTQ crimes and harassment to call 911 and wait for police to arrive,” it says.

Wallack Holdings LLC asked the OPD to allow Mango’s to participate and was initially told the initiative was just for Orlando businesses.

The business continued pushing, contacting the police chief and elected officials.

Finally, OPD went ahead and made Mango’s an honorary safe place, giving the club a decal.

Space Mountain rightfully gets all the credit as Disneys first computerized theme park ride.

The plans for that roller coaster existed during Walt Disneys lifetime, but the ride wouldnt debut until 1975.

The delay stemmed from a lack of readily available computing power. Space Mountain demanded more processing than anyone could provide in the 1960s.

Oddly, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad benefited from this process. As Disney finished Space Mountain, its Imagineers mastered computer technology.

These planners recognized the value of computer sensors placed around the coaster tracks of other rides.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad represents the first planned roller coaster design involving readily available computer technology.

When you ride Space Mountain and it consecutively, youll never recognize the similarities between the two.
